I feel bad saying this, but really... the Klingon redesign, that's what's getting nominated for an Emmy?

As Star Trek fans we are probably rather biased when it comes to the Klingon re-design, but if you look at it from a non-linear, non-subjective point of view it really isn't that bad.

Good for them. I also noticed news stories saying Netflix got the most nominations, which is wild. Bet Hollywood is pissed off to no end about that one.

the Klingon makeup looks amazing if you ignore it is trying to be Klingon.

Agree. You remove fan bias (which, rightfully, the Emmys don't give a shit about), and it's pretty awesome on its own merits.

No, it's quite terrible.

Good to see Westworld and GoT so well represented this year. Between them and the new Lost In Space, any visual award given to STD will be a miscarriage.

I'm torn. I think they did some good make-up work on Discovery. Just that the designs were pretty poor, at least in the context of what they were going for.

It's about impossible to do good makeup work with bad designs, except in the sense that the application is professionally done.

The Klingon makeups on STD might as well have been rubber masks - bulky, rigid, virtually expressionless and completely blocking whatever performances the actors were giving. This was exacerbated further by apparent dental appliances that interfered with their vocal range and expression.

John Chambers did more with simple foam rubber appliances 50 years ago - not to mention what Rick Baker accomplished at the turn of the century with the POTA remake. Much more sophisticated work has been done since. STD's work is just pitiable by comparison.

Interestingly Amazon got significantly less nominations than others. But that will change next year when Man in the High Castle will be back and The Expanse premiers on Amazon.

Westworld is really well done.
Lost in Space just looks very generic to me, like they dipped into a bag of science fiction parts and came up with.. something, which is fine, that's what its ancestor basically did.

What's really interesting is that the broadcast networks are gettin' slaughtered.

It's really an amazing design and makeup application. But people don't see it here because they have predetermined ideas of how fictional aliens should look.

None of that is really so.

What's his name, Doug Jones's character, OTOH, is quite well done in every respect and pretty sophisticated for a character that has a major weekly part on a show. The guy who designs the aliens did some really striking work for the Abrams movies - including the JJVerse Klingons. But the STD Klingons are just crap, and it has nothing to do with how much they "look like aliens are supposed to look."

There's been a lot of movies and TV shows that have nothing to do with Star Trek that demonstrate and point the way to innovative and persuasive effects makeup design.
