The global Star Wars fandom is huge, but , in terms of overall BO numbers, it contributed basically nothing to the BO success of TFA, R1, and TLJ (and, yes, TLJ was a BO success, regardless of perceptions about its quality as a film); General audience response is what earned those movies their money, but, for whatever reason, the General Audience response to Solo just didn't materialize to the degree that Lucasfilm believed that it was going to.

Having said that, though, Solo will still ultimately recoup its budget and more in the long run.

But, that's the error. Fans are not worried about the long run. It is short term satisfaction or nothing at all.

Nope. They were well stocked and then sold out. Same with Forces of Destiny dolls. Few survived long enough to be clearanced.

^ Running a business empire is nothing like what happens in an election, where public opinion and perception are things that matter.

Lucasfilm does not care what a miniscule fraction of a community that in itself only represents the tiniest portion of the monetary response to the release of a Star Wars film thinks or believes, not does it care how that miniscule fraction behaves.

Their miscalculation with Solo's General Audience reception will, by necessity, cause them to do an assessment to figure out what mistakes were made and where they were made, because they will be wanting to maximize the General Audience response to future SW films as much as possible as a good business practice.

I like Solo. Rogue One just rubs me the wrong way in the same vein as Discovery. Though neither are the crimes against humanity that some folks portray them as.

The principle was there since ESB, and first drafts of ROTJ involved Obi-Wan returning from the "nether world" physically to aid Luke and Yoda providing a Force shield from the nether world.

I adored the socio-political commentary of TLJ ... that machismo isn't always a successful means to an end, that standing up to a corrupt society can produce an unintended positive impact, that a failed plan can still create positive change, that sacrificing winning the battle can mean a better chance of winning the war ... TLJ was entirely progressive, in so many ways ... I think it was the perfect SW film for our time.
