2001: A Space Odyssey reboot?

Maybe a reboot that isn't 100 hours long, and actually has a coherent story with a real ending? That's the reboot I'd like to see. Take the few little good elements of 2001 (the crazy AI and the astronaut fighting against him), and make a real movie, not an overly long incoherent art piece like the terrible original movie.
I think going "artsy" with that story was the only logical choice. How else would they film what transpires in the book? Should there be a narrator explaining what's going on?

I found 3001: The Final Odyssey the best of the bunch. Not so much the conclusion of the Bowman/HAL storyline, but because of Clarke's predictions of the future. Most of mankind now living in the space elevators, how future society might evolve.

It was ended a bit too perfectly, IMHO. His heart wasn't in it, and you could tell. The first two books were a labor of love, the third OK, but by the fourth, the vibe was quite different, even the ideology. I didn't like how a lot of the things were done in that one, as it seemed to be more of a series of winks and nudges over things that had developed since 2001 had been written; even a SW reference in the form of the Tatooine set in the Tunisian desert. And I felt those took precedence over a good story, likely because there really wasn't much to tell at this point. Sometimes just because you can end something doesn't mean you should. It was best left open-ended.

Asimov made the same mistake with the Foundation series.

I actually quite liked the Foundation Prequels. I think where he made a mistep was with Foundation & Earth. I felt that he corrected that a bit with the Prequels as they were more of a return to form. Foundation & Earth though, from what I remember, was due to the publisher wanting a sequel while his heart wasn't necessarily in it. It was kind of a sad read.

I know there was Prelude to Foundation which I read but can't recall any others and found Foundation and Earth plus tying into in the I, Robot series dire.

Forward the Foundation, which was Prelude's sequel. Both I felt were quite good. But yeah, Foundation & Earth was dire for the reasons you state. Felt like he was grasping at straws to connect the two series. There wasn't really any need for it, but I think it was a publisher demand.

Michael Bay should direct the reboot.

Can you imagine how awesome that would be?

2021: A Space Odyssey

Francis Ford Coppola.

In the style of Apocalypse Now.

Make HAL a person instead of a computer.

Hal needs to get his ass kicked for going rogue.

Soundtrack by Adrenaline.

'Road of The Gypsy'.

"It's been 20 long years...."

:p

Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong.

Some of the reboot ideas mentioned are good so far, but all things considered, I'd rather see an adaptation of this book series by Clarke, which has similar tech to 2001.

Not only the I, Robot series but The End of Eternity as well I seem to recall.

Thanks for the link. I read 'The Gates of Heaven' and 'Re-Entry' by Preuss back in the 80s but then kind of lost track of him since. Enjoyed those two.
