What would they do with this?

They would pretty much have to borrow the year from the title of Arthur C. Clarke's third book and call it 2061: A Space Odyssey, or from the fourth to make it 3001: A Space Odyssey, because 2001 and 2010 are in the past.

From Clarke's short story 'The Sentinel', to the original film, to the sequel, to Clarke's four novels, there really is no consistency throughout.

Will they start from scratch with a significantly changed story and leave room for sequels that 'fit' if the first film is successful?

What do you think they will do? What do you think they should do?

They should build a cinematic universe out of it! :D

Start of with a few prequels:
    • HAL: Origins - a techno-thriller about the creation of HAL 9000, starring Tom Cruise as a crazy scientist.
    • Monkey Business - set before the Dawn of Man bit, a wacky comedy about a tribe of monkeys havin' fun before the monolith landed, starring Tom Cruise as a crazy monkey.
    • Monolith: Return - directed by David Lynch, an abstract look at the purpose behind the monoliths, starring Tom Cruise as Kyle MacLachlan's crazy twin brother who's a crazy monolith builder.

    Then do 2001.

And then everyone in the movie gets a spin-off (Harley Quinn gets seven) and you're golden! :techman:

Call it SPACE ODYSSEY and leave the year, itself, in question. And whatever you do, don't bring back Douglas Rain! Seriously ... if you're going to do your own thing ... Go ALL the Way!

I wouldn't mind 2061 or 3001 films (in fact, Tom Hanks was at one time keen on making a 3001 film, both directing it and playing Frank Poole) but they should leave 2001 and 2010 alone.

How about a miniseries covering all the books?

It's about time...it's about space...it's about the Monolith in the strangest place...

(anybody old enough to remember 2001 is old enough for that reference ;) )

Yeah, the latest rumours I'd heard were about 3001, which to be honest I'm not too keen on myself.I felt it was the weakest of the novels. Maybe it's a case of people hearing about 2001, not realizing there are sequels, thinking they'd have to redo 2001, when in fact they'd be making either 2061 and 3001.

I found 3001: The Final Odyssey the best of the bunch. Not so much the conclusion of the Bowman/HAL storyline, but because of Clarke's predictions of the future. Most of mankind now living in the space elevators, how future society might evolve.

Make it a rock opera musical featuring remakes of classic songs. 2001: A Rock Odyssey.

    Space Oddity
and Rocket Man are of course a given, but also songs like Pete Townshend's Let My Love Open The Door:

    While Poole's body keeps receding
    Deeper into outer space
    HAL's orders are misleading
He doesn't know how to behave

    HAL, please open the door
    HAL, please open the door
HAL, please open the door, for my pod

Dave, I can't open the door
Dave, I can't open the door

One of the oldies cable channels (Decades?) was actually running that just last year. I watched it on weekends during breakfast. It was... more awful then I remembered.

Do 3001, grafting the Mount Zeus plot line from 2061 (swapping Floyd for Poole) to pad out the 3001 plotline. Done.

if there's anyone in hollywood who even thinks of doing any sort of reboot, they need a black monolith dropped on them post haste.

Maybe a reboot that isn't 100 hours long, and actually has a coherent story with a real ending? That's the reboot I'd like to see. Take the few little good elements of 2001 (the crazy AI and the astronaut fighting against him), and make a real movie, not an overly long incoherent art piece like the terrible original movie.

    There's only one slight problem.

    2061 and 3001 were terrible.

Not to mention 3001 ripping off the ending from Independence Day.
