Spoilers Supergirl - Season 3

On a new topic, does anyone have any thoughts on the differences between this Supergirl (played by Melissa Benoist) and the Supergirl on Smallville (played by Laura Vandervoot)?

Kara from Smallville could get a Red Lantern ring, Kara from Supergirl couldn't.

But maybe Russian Kara could... :vulcan:

Which makes you wonder why they sometimes play the" She might be going evil" route. What is the point of teasing people with something nobody will expect to happen. At the very least you should never let the audience in on your plans.

Jason

The show has done this exactly twice, and, in the second instance, ended the situation by explicitly stating that Lena was never going to follow her brother and mother's path even as she realized that there were elements of their genetic templates that she'd inherited that she ought to embrace instead of running away from.

Lena doesn't have to "go evil" to have conflict with Supergirl. We saw that this season, and it was interesting.

In fact, conflict between two characters that both have admirable motives is the basis for a lot of interesting drama. "Antagonist" does not necessarily mean "villain." Humanity's needs don't necessarily align with Supergirl's. Again, we saw that this season.

I hope that all of the characters can move towards having more complex relationships.

^ I agree; the problem that exists, though, is that people look at Lena having conflict with Kara and immediately assume that the show is heading down the path of turning Lena evil, despite the fact that the writers went out of their way to explicitly establish otherwise.

Current societal culture is stark "black and white" (you're either with me, or you're my enemy), and while I get that the show wants to "live in the grey" and show that conflict can exist between inherently good people, it's really doing more harm than good, IMO.

You pretty much summed it up. Smallville was pretty much reflecting the comics' more aloof yet oversexualized take on the character at the time, I think, while Supergirl's take is more of an amalgam of the character's portrayals over different eras. Benoist's portrayal is definitely superior, as is true of most things about Supergirl in comparison to Smallville.

I definitely prefer the casting of Laura Vandervoort for Kara/Supergirl than Benoist.

She was the Michael Turner/Ian Churchill Supergirl from the 2000s come to life. LV is an awesome person IRL too.

The problem was the writing of Smallville, and the 'no tights' mantra let the character down.

Someday, hopefully they will do this character in a way that works on the big screen, and keep Kara/Supergirl as a teenager, as she should be.

Unlike many fans, I quite liked that version of Supergirl in the comics. But then, I like pretty much all versions of Supergirl, except those who aren't a Kryptonian named Kara Zor-El for dumbass DC reasons.

Laura needed to eat a cookie.

As indigo, Laura's character could have "put on" a Supergirl uniform for reasons.

Either to screw with Kara Psychologically, or to screw with Non sexually.

She had a good bod for Supergirl. She looks super skinny now in real life though and not as curvy, but meh. She still has the right face for SG.

I can scarcely imagine the outrage had a teen girl knocked Superman out... :p

Well hopefully the DCEU Superman gets a long awaited reboot anyway. He's already been dragged through the mud in disgrace.

I've always found the Superman/Supergirl dynamic more effective when he's a paternal figure to her, a father figure. It makes the characters and their perspectives vastly different. Plus her being a teenager just makes the character more fun and opens up that whole world that Spider-Man Homecoming benefited from. Doing a comic of age story.

I liked it as well, but the 2000s Kara/Supergirl was written and drawn to appeal to men.The Benoist CW Supergirl was developed with the opposite goal in mind. That's why they come across as vastly different.

To me though, WB/DC needs to get Superman right first before branching off into Supergirl. The Superman IP is in complete disarray.

I love Melissa's Kara, but as a fan of the Supernatural and of Peter David's writing, I think seeing the Linda Danvers "Earth-Born Angel" version of Supergirl in live-action would be awesome.

I even went so far as to brainstorm my own "VTV" fanfic series based on the concept.

I quite liked the "Earth Born Angel" version of Supergirl, but IMO like the abandoned idea of Zauriel as the "new Hawkman", I don't think she necessarily needed to be Supergirl for anything other than RW marketing reasons with it mainly being a holdover from the Luthor-Matrix 'relationship' plot.

Katie McGrath in her old show, Merlin, went from the goody good lady in waiting, possible love interest, to evil queen, and then outright world killer, in just 5 years.

The concept of Supergirl has always been popular, and DC clearly felt that there was a market for a solo Supergirl title despite the lack of real story momentum behind the Matrix version of the character, and it's that latter element that Peter David's series provided, ironically by turning her into a totally new character.

As an aside, I decided to "recalibrate" the series concept I mentioned earlier (leaning in much harder on the Earth-Born Angel elements of the character), and am thinking about sharing it here on the boards.

My issue with Katie on SG (and I haven't watched most of SG, so maybe things have changed) is she comes off as a lite version of Rosenbaum's Lex, in female form. Like they're trying to do a similar character arc, but this time with a woman.

Problem is, that's a tough act to follow. Rosenbaum was incredible. Perhaps him and Glover gave the best performances we've ever seen on The CW. Consistently. Over 7 years. Despite bad writing, they aimed to elevate the material.

I remember they brought in the Bra woman from Seinfeld as the female version of a Lionel-like character, and it was laughably bad.
