I was going to open up a Star Trek themed steakhouse but then I realized all of my customers would argue about whether or not the Rib was "Prime" so I changed my mind.
shouldn't we want the story/universe to be consistent with what came before?
Both the TNG and the DSC producers intended for their product to be set in the prime timeline...
You know expect the Naked Now which was sort of sequel/retelling of a TOS episode. Even showed the Enterprise (Albeit the Refit pre-remastered).Eh, at the start of TNG, it was really just another show.

I'm far from a "canonista", but at the same time I do expect some consistency. YMMV.
This is the "can't win" DSC creators get from certain fans.Yes, it was trying to ease people in by giving an episode that rode on the coattails of TOS. But at least they weren't going to that well every single week. It started doing its own thing. With varying degrees of success.
If they delve into backstory, they're riding old show's coat tails. If they try something new like a party in the lounge or .. gasp, spore drive, they'll get various whines of "This is not trek!" and appeals to "Gene's vision!"
in 13 episodes. Jesus, give it a rest.I've not complained about either. Care to try again?
The Spore Drive could've been a creative boon to Trek. A drive that can take you anywhere in the universe. Where did Discovery take us? To a Klingon war and the Mirror Universe.
in 13 episodes.

No. but I am not replying to you anymore. It serves no purpose. I get that this forum is for discussion back and forth. You don't have to like a show or dislike it. But it's clear on this point there is no way we can agree on virtually anything. In fifteen episodes. Westworld and other shows seem to have no problems being creative with even less episodes.
Why? Have I hit a nerve.![]()
I quite like it too, although I'm currently at the beginning of my 3rd season rewatch and my good will is fading.
Sorry, but is it just me or is that a bit of a double-standard. Both the TNG and the DSC producers intended for their product to be set in the prime timeline, TNG had the analytically-minded character say something that was directly contradicted by TOS and DSC showed something that directly contradict something the analytically-minded character on TOS said. Why is either one less prime timeline than the other?
The writers did their research. Then the delivered a story that worked. There are numerous ways that statement still works in continuity, and people can either accept that or not, of course. But the writers of the show know their continuity, and this is still an ongoing story.
Yeah, that's fair enough. Honestly, I wish they'd have gone that route.Eh, at the start of TNG, it was really just another show. I think Roddenberry thought of it as a reboot. A way to right the "mistakes" of TOS. Even in the TMP novelization (written by Roddenberry), the TOS adventures were seen as a dramatization.
Well, my personal opinion on that stuff is that I can gloss over minor continuity problems and ignore one line of dialogue, but if the Temporal Cold War and its splintering of timelines works for you, fair enough.Maybe the TNG timeline was also affected by the temporal cold war then, Jinn?

I find it interesting how people jump to "They didn't do their homework!" as opposed to "They did their homework, are aware of the discontinuity but chose to do something different."No, they certainly haven't done their homework! If they had we wouldn't have this problem with the show! One of many may I add?

They are claiming their did their homework and those of us who have actually done our homework can see that they didn't. If you don't want to do the homework, do something new. CBS and the show runners call this a reboot and 90% of this thread becomes moot. A reboot can be as close or far from the original as they want it to be.I find it interesting how people jump to "They didn't do their homework!" as opposed to "They did their homework, are aware of the discontinuity but chose to do something different."
I'd love to see your results on that!Awhile ago I tried to catalogue Trek's timelines, and make a swirly visual chart not unlike Daniels' Temporal Observatory from "Cold Front".
James R. Kirk and only James R. Kirk!Which one is the Prime Universe again?
