My personal thoughts on the aesthetics is there has been an attempt to save the TOS look for actual Constitutions. It's been more than hinted at in one of the DSC books (and those writers work closely with the TV staff) that Connies have different uniforms, different design parameters (a big deal made about them not having ready rooms, which indeed 1701 never had), and in general a different aesthetic. They were kept, if not as a black program, at least aspects of them and their missions kept secret during the Robert April years.

They purposefully did not want Shenzou or Discovery to look like Enterprise. I'm interested to see how they make Enterprise look but hints so far show it will look somewhat TOS. Unless there are poly-blend pulllovers, carboard tube nacelles and jellybean buttons, some people are not going to be happy, but I think they've been slowly building this up.
Again the Enterprise model wasn't going to please everyone. They were never going to use the original Jefferies model in this show. GR wouldn't have, either. Those who wish to return to that time will need a time crystal, an AMT model warp nacelle and a non-newtonian fluid of adequate viscosity...

Most of the episodes of this season are more then likely already written so that isn't a big problem, they'll just hire new writers for Season 3 if it happens.

Yeah there was, that is why they updated the design for TMP. It wouldn't standing up on a big production movie and giant screen.

    That's silly.

A "slice of life" episode is possible as long as the A-plot is either comedic or character-focused.

Hell, we got a little of this in DIS Season 1. Things like Stamets and Culber brushing their teeth, Burnham and Tilly talking about burritos, etc. By and large those were the personal highlights of the season to me.

I'm sure they did uncredited rewrites through the whole season, but Berg/Harberts were only credited as writers in episodes 2 (teleplay only), 3, 5 (story only), and 15.

I don't know how much we can say anything past episode 2 was Fuller's original vision. We know that when Jason Isaacs came onto the set initially, he was handed a script for episode 3, and told the whole thing would be pulped, so it likely radically differed from what Fuller wanted. We know that a lot of the opening arc was not supposed to be this way initially, because the tardigrade was supposed to be a bridge officer.

We also know though from interviews that Berg and Harberts saw themselves as "overseeing the arc of the series" and making sure there was continuity from episode to episode. So much of the thematic flop - and definitely the lackluster finale - rests on their feet.

We also know Fuller planned on having the Mirror Universe stuff to happen way earlier in the season.

Akiva Goldsman was heavily involved in Will You Take My Hand Or I Will Explode Your Planet
not their best episode, but he also did Context Is For Kings and I thought that was one of the best if not the best episode of S1

Context is for Kings was a pretty good sci-fi TV, but it didn't really feel like a Trek show. From Landry calling the prisoners "garbage" to dour mood of basically everyone to the horror-movie vibe it felt like some other show with a few Trek trappings.

That said, I agree in retrospect it was one of the better outings, in that it was a coherent hour or so of TV without many of the mistakes which marred the end run of the series.

I've thought about Landry since then, and her portrayal actually makes sense.
this should probably be on another thread, but here goes..

Landry may have been one of those Lorca hand-picked to be on Discovery, just like Burnham. He knew her in the Mirror Universe and, as the Empress said about another follower, he groomed her. Her display of loyalty to Lorca over the spirit of Starfleet was troubling. We never got to know her. Was she already someone with a troubled career over her anti-Vulcanism, or her treatment of others? Either way, Lorca would have given Landry a clean dataslate to become the sort of person she probably was in his own universe.

And without those constraints and disregard for training, she acted stupid and got herself killed. She didn't have the temperament or skill-set to be in the situation she was in. She may not be all that much better in the MU, but she was willing to do hard time in an agonizer for Lorca, and that probably matters.

Since the original enterprise model was built for TV (and the TMP version was based on the phase ii design which was also designed for tv) it makes me wonder what the original “prime” Enterprise would have looked like had TOS been a film not a tv series. I doubt the DSC continuity version of the Enterprise would have been the outcome but we’ll never know.

You know that hadn’t occurred to me. With this in mind I hope they do more of that in s2 :)

I suspect it would have depended if TOS was made before or after 2001: A Space Odyssey.
TOS in many ways borrowed and was a homage to Forbidden Planet, so I think that answers one aspect of the question. They probably would have had a budget for more camera angles and may have been able to enhance the lighting, but not much.

If filmed after, it would have to have been modified. 2001 rewrote the rules.

The colors of the ship feel kind of odd against some of the backgrounds. The reds kind of pop more but its more distracting than appealing. It fits more in with the Kelvin shots than the TMP ones, to me.

The only images it looks good in are the Kelvin Timeline ones.

It doesn't stand out to me as much as its one of those, you sip your soda expecting coke and its dr pepper and it takes a minute to register, but you like Dr pepper just fine so you go ahead and drink it.

It's pretty clear now that the whole Fuller thing was a load of BS. Multiple sackings from shows and his best friends on Discovery revealed as bullies.

It's hard to keep up with who has been fired and hired. Who gets the credit or blame for this or that. Seems to be happening all over.
