Alex Kurtzman Gets New Deal With CBS, Will Expand 'Star Trek' TV

This new development is interesting news that's for sure!

Ultimately, the only mooted series I'm really interested in is the one with Stewart in it although the animation could be fun depending what it's about. A series about Khan doesn't hugely appeal and I've never really understood the ongoing obsession about making a Starfleet Academy series or movie.

It would be great if Stewart did return as I feel (as I imagine many others do) that Nemesis wasn't a fitting end for that era. My personal hope is that some DS9 and Voyager characters also make appearances. Ultimately, I'm just very happy that it seems we're finally getting something which isn't a prequel or a reboot! That being said, I am looking forward to seeing Anson Mount as Pike as I really enjoyed him in Hell on Wheels.

Just a thought about the potential academy series... I'm another who doesn't really like the idea, and think it's potential is much more limited than other proposals... But perhaps if it is post-Nemesis, and Picard is now teaching. That might give it some further merit. :techman:

Evidence?

There are many reasons to go all-in on Trek that have nothing to with DISC. In fact, one would be to make sure that other projects are in the hopper if/when DISC fails.
No one can know entirely what's going on at CBS, but its interesting to guess. My inference though is top management IS aware that there are problems behind the scenes at Discovery and they need to be addressed. Any new show was due for a tweaking after season 1.

Rumors of the Khan miniseries go back to last year, so this idea for CBS to start promoting a bunch of Trek shows may have been in their plans all along. I'd say they're pleased enough with DISCO's performance to green-light it, now.

I think also, in context, this news starts to get released as the chances for CBS and Viacom merging diminish.

I mean, CBS was self-aware enough to tell Berg/Harberts that they needed to stop having shows solely take place on ship, and forced them into episode eight. Thus they showed a bit more understanding in one narrow area of what Trek fans want than the showrunners themselves did. Thus I wouldn't be shocked if there was a whole laundry list of changes they asked for Season 2.

One can only hope. Otherwise, we might get "One Night In Turbolift 3".

CBS indicated before Discovery premiered that regardless of the success or failure of Discovery, they were planning to make more Trek content.

What? Since when would a broadcast network (or one of the more recent online alternatives) admit that a not-yet-premiered new series might fail?

I interpreted it more as reassuring fans that no matter what, they weren't going to let the Trek TV franchise sit idle for a decade plus again.

I do wonder if we will see backsliding on diversity? After the internet temper tantrums over the various Disney Star Wars films and Discovery.

More white men at the center of the various shows.

There will be backlash no matter what they do in whatever dimension they do it.

If anyone at CBS is worried about "backlash" or is willing to allow such a thing to change the direction of a series, they better get out of the franchise genre business.

And are generally negative, pissy, entitled, opinionated, and splintered. Just par for the course.

If anything, I hope they pat themselves on the back for pissing off the right people. This is an area where they should dig in hard and not cave in at all.

Them: "Where are all the straight white men?"
Me: "I don't know. Serving on other ships?"

No Starfleet Academy series. Please. This has been floated so many times over the years and never come to fruition, thank goodness. I wish the idea would finally die.

I'd want to go forward in the timeline so stories can be explored without restrictions imposed by future canon. Enterprise, Kelvinverse and now Discovery ... I think Trek's spent enough time in it's past.
