Who did Kirk inherit from Pike's crew

I was always struck by the easy camaraderie between Kirk and Scotty seen in the earliest episodes. It suggests that they knew each other well and had built a lot of trust in each other’s abilities; perhaps they worked together on other ships.

OTOH, you could see how Kirk would have relied on Scotty as a senior holdover who was both competent and knew the ship’s little ways. Of course, the two might simply have clicked from the first handshake when Kirk assumed command.

Either way, those early episodes showcased a special non-com/first lieutenant relationship that was lost over time, when Scotty’s character veered dangerously close to comic relief.

See also their reunion in TMP, the cute way Kirk at one point drops into Scotty's accent and then they share a smile. The Kirk/Scotty friendship definitely feels like a thing, I think gets a little overshadowed by Kirk's relationships with Spock and Bones, but it's definitely there.

Not to flog this, but “The Doomsday Machine” works so well because you have the Decker/Spock conflict complimented by the Kirk/Scott partnership.

“Scotty! You’ve earned your pay for the week.”​

Not to mention Scotty's last plea "JIM!" at the end of "Mirror, Mirror" when Kirk says that he'll be the one to stay in the Mirror Universe. It's the only time in Trek that Scotty calls Kirk by his first name.

If it was the same guy, and I don't think it was, how come he'd been demoted? Lieutenant Kyle started off in those uniforms but once he'd been promoted to a red shirt (or yellow in immunity Syndrome despite Kirk not being able to pronounce his name correctly) he never went back down in the ranks!

Not “Pike in Hell” scary (that was a “behind the sofa” moment!), but definitely made an impression.

The Pike in hell bit wasn't too bad for me but the worst was when Pike tried to strangle the Keeper and he/she turned into an anthropoid werewolf! I didn't want to go upstairs to the toilet in case that thing was waiting outside on the stairs!!!

A better question than "who did Kirk inherit from Pike" might be "who did Pike take with him when he was promoted?"

Now, assuming no unexpected crew deaths from the "Cage" to just before "Where No Man Has Gone Before" the obvious answers would be Number One, the ships doctor (Boyce?) and Jose Tyler. It is quite reasonable that Pike being promoted to Fleet Captain, he was able to secure a ship command from Number One and perhaps Tyler as well. The doctor might've simply served on till retirement.

Another good question might be why Pike left Spock on the Enterprise given the high regard they both apparently had for each other. In all likelihood it was at Spock's request who (though he would never admit to an emotional reason) simply had come to think of the Enterprise as "home".

It is quite reasonable that Pike being promoted to Fleet Captain, he was able to secure a ship command from Number One and perhaps Tyler as well. The doctor might've simply served on till retirement.

I got the impression from "The Menagerie" that Fleet Captain was a desk job. That's why Pike was around to rescue the cadets from the training vessel.

I can't imagine that Pike would've taken too many of his officers with him to the new position. Maybe Yeoman Colt as his personal attache if they'd built up a good working relationship by then. He might've made an offer to Spock, but Spock politely refused, as staying on the Enterprise offered the greatest chance of scientific discovery. Number One I imagine got her own ship (the Yorktown in John Byrne's Trek comics).

In DC's Star Trek Annual #1, Number One's legs are crushed in a sudden accident in the cargo bay. She pushes Pike and Kirk out of the way of a falling storage unit, saving their lives. Spock then performs a quick mind meld on her to reduce her pain. Number One's recovery time necessitates that Kirk pick a new first officer, and Kirk immediately contacts his old friend Gary Mitchell (then on shore leave at Wrigley's Pleasure Planet).

Another bit from DC's Star Trek Annual #1 that I always liked: When the departing Captain Pike introduces Kirk to his chief engineer Scotty, an over-eager Kirk tells Scotty that he was the assistant chief engineer on the El Dorado, so they have a lot in common. As soon as Pike and Kirk walk away, we see Scotty rolling his eyes, dreading some new know-it-all wet-behind-the-ears Captain telling him his job.

Since the story is being told in flashback, there's a caption of the present day Scotty sheepishly apologizing to Admiral Kirk, as he didn't realize that Kirk overheard him. Kirk says, "No apologies necessary, Scotty... I probably did come off a little pushy."

It's the only time in Trek that Scotty calls Kirk by his first name.

Until revived Scotty refers to him as "Jim Kirk" upon being beamed aboard the Enterprise-D. "The Enterprise? I should have known. I bet Jim Kirk himself hauled the old girl out of mothballs to come looking for me."

That must have some kind of long term transporter mental aberration due to the length of time that Scotty had been trapped inside the beam as Scotty should have remembered that Kirk was presumed dead on the Enterprise B 80 years earlier! Although as we all know they hadn't filmed Generations at that point!

I meant when Scotty was addressing Kirk directly. Referring to someone by their full name when they're not there isn't especially notable.

This is a good possibility. Another is that he got a job directly relating to the Academy, and not relating to his rank at all. I guess the second season of DSC stands a good chance of educating us on the matter, by setting up the scene for the upcoming promotion.

Assuming, of course, that the promotion indeed lies in the future of DSC. Might be Kirk met him in that ceremony long before the ship was transferred.

Again, DSC probably tells us a few key facts without risk of contradiction. Number One might be gone already, say. Or Boyce. All we know for sure is that Spock still stays, and this not merely because canonreasonsstuff, but because they said so in the show itself.

And none of that really contradicts each other much, demonstrating how open the playing field remains for further pitches.

Also great is when Kirk hears Scotty's voice over the intercom and Shatner gives this wordless smile of clear admiration at his engineer's efficiency in getting ship's communications restored.

Not just "Aye," but "Aye, Captain," returning to addressing him by rank. Shatner's smile afterwards is also fantastic. Truly one of my favorite scenes in all of TOS.

There's definitely a stronger personal friendship there between Kirk and Scott than is sometimes acknowledged
