So news is going around that one of the possible new series/limited series involves the return of Patrick Stewart.

The new deal comes as rumblings about another Star Trek series, featuring Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Star Trek: The Next Generation's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, have been heating up. Sources say Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman, who left Discovery after season one, are attached to the Stewart-led reboot. CBS TV Studios declined to confirm the Stewart project as sources say a deal is far from completed and may not happen despite the fact that the actor recently teased his potential return to the franchise.

Just for fun, what timeframe would you like? A decade after Nemesis, sometime after whatever happened with Romulus being destroyed?

Since Nemesis was released in 2002, to realistically depict the passage of time this show would need to take place about sixteen years after those events.

By that time, perhaps Picard has accepted a promotion to the admiralty, where he is in charge of fleet operations or something, and he is constantly butting heads with fellow Admiral Janeway.

A limited series based on young (pre-artificial heart) Picard's exploits would be a very worthy entry and I would love to see it. In fact someone else had suggested it elsewhere on this board and I was surprised at myself for actually considering the potential of it. Now, if Sir Patrick Stewart were somehow involved in that sort of an approach, then fine. I welcome the prospect. But I do not want to see a TNG reunion, or an elderly Picard show. STAR TREK: The Next Generation was a supremely satisfying STAR TREK spinoff in its day, and except for in reruns, that day is over. It's still available, as it was, and still entertaining as it always did. But it's not such a bad thing to acknowledge that greatness has its time and that time expires and something else great comes along.

I've desperately been wanting to see any Trek from the lost (post TUC/pre TNG) time period for a long time, and something like a Young Picard era show would be really intriguing.

Sir Patrick in Bolian makeup portraying the aging Engineer on a cargo ship in the 2380s, which becomes embroiled in a plot by an emerging power keen to make a name for itself at a time when the galaxy is focusing on bigger issues (such as the collapse of the Cardassian Union, alliance of the Breen and Tzenkethi, tentative peace treaty between the Federation and Romulans). Just because he's in it doesn't mean he'd be playing Picard.

I'm doubting they'll set this post-TOS/pre-TNG. Patrick Stewart just returning to play some Joe Shmoe is not gonna be a big draw. Stewart back as Picard will be the big selling point. Whether you like TNG or not, it's still the only Trek spin-off to have made it to pop culture status like TOS, regardless of NEMESIS tanking.

I'm getting the sense that this will be less a TNG reunion and more of a Picard comeback, with maybe a few of the TNG crew members making occasional guest appearances. This makes me a lot more intrigued because we'd see Picard playing up against a different cast and that would promise a different and more fresh dynamic. Storywise, this just makes more sense. We've always griped about how the TNG and TOS films got a bit ridiculous having the same cast in the same posts in the films (though TUC did at least give Sulu his own ship), so it will be refreshing take a different route with a familiar character.

I suspect if Spiner returns at some point they'd only save him for a few select scenes, utilizing deaging tech for whenever he's around. I remember first watching NEMESIS and theaters and when we got the first shot of Data at the wedding that Spiner's age was becoming very hard to hide.

Reunion mini series would be awesome. If only to see the opening sequence again, the music unchanged, the voice over unchanged, but this time, it’s a sovereign class ship whizzing by.

Until there are actual reports of actual contracts signed by actual people, I'm calling BS.

Ol' Paddy seems to be happy being a pensioner hanging with his buddy what's-his-face.

Second this. I would extend it to include Picard's early years commanding the USS Stargazer. Yes, it's been novelized, but unfortunately all ST novels are non-canon universe - although I don't oppose incorporating some novel characters as supporting characters in the series.

Given that there's a lot of interests on TNG-related series from fans who grew up watching it in the 1980s and 1990s, I see a lot of potential for a young Picard's space adventure, with Patrick Stewart guest-starring from time to time as an older Picard reflects on his early years....

I also would like to see a series based on Peter David's New Frontier novels. Set in post-Voyager timeline.

Would be cool to see Mackenzie ('Mac') Calhoun and Elizabeth ('Eppy') Shelby in the flesh, although of course, getting Peter to sign on to this would depend on a negotiation with the show-runners.

Why not just combine the Picard idea and the Academy idea into one idea? Make Picard in charge of Starfleet Academy and then focus on some cadets. I kind of prefer actually if they took a more "Lower Decks" idea and split the focus on Picard and some instructors, at least one might also be a character we already know, and 4 or 5 cadets on some Req Squad type of unit.

I'm curious how/if they'd be able to reference this, what with it being an invention of Paramount and not CBS. The writers have made it clear they're not allowed to touch anything from the movies (although they may not actually know what they're talking about... which is even more worrying. John Eaves genuinely thought his re-imagined Discoveryprise was changed for legal reasons, but CBS announced otherwise)

hopefully they won't, and the JJverse is let die a quiet death. Or they could follow previous form, open with Romulus blowing up, and then have Picard say "computer end program" and walk out of the holodeck. Entire JJ abomination was a holodeck simulation, all problems solved :-)

You do know Paramount recently announced Star Trek 4, right?

And that the guy behind these new CBS Trek shows is Alex Kurtzman, co-writer of the first two Kelvin movies?

I highly doubt they'd get Patrick Stewart to return. He'll look at the money offered and laugh.

If he were to return it'd probably cost them so much that the show would end up having little money for anything else.

I have heard that Stewart has voiced interest in a return.

For me, I do NOT want another prequel. We have enough, there has been Enterprise, the reboot movies and Discovery.

So, this being a potential mini series, it's a good opportunity to take things forward and set up a continuation in 2390 something

A nice changing of the guard would be good.
