Immigration on Federation Earth and the Sol system

There's one race, the human race.

I'm not convinced ww3 landed in Europe or the US. OK, maybe Golden Gate Bridge, Eiffel Tower and St Paul's cathedral may have been rebuilt, but the London Eye? Or The Shard? Or the exact same street layouts we see today?

How different were Hiroshima, Nagasaki, or Dresden rebuilt after they were bombed? That should give an idea about rebuilding post WW3

Though it interesting that San Francisco is the major American city featured. It is currently thirteenth most populous city in the country. I don't think we ever see future New York or Washington, New Orleans is seen, but in the USA scale it is a minor city. So it indeed it is perfectly possible that most big American cities were nuked, and it was SF which was somehow spared, and thus became this important hub. Historical buildings of both London and Paris remaining intact though supports an idea that maybe the Europe was not directly involved in the nuclear conflict. Perhaps it was USA versus the Eastern Coalition (Trump had withdrawn USA from NATO.)

^London and Paris have survived 2 World Wars (and both nations were participants) so there is a good chance they can survive another lol
In RL the US mainland was never attacked or invaded in either war. In the Star Trek universe San Francisco must have grown to the size of present day New York city in land area and population, to be the HQ of the Federation main defence and exploration body.

Being the headquarters of the Federation main defense and exploration body does not require the city to be a certain size, nor would such significance necessarily cause the city to grow any larger than at present.

There are many capital cities that are not the largest city in there geopolitical sphere of influence. Washington DC, for example, is ranked 22 on the list of largest US cities. San Francisco is 13th.

The population of the Federation runs in the trillions, even if 0.000000000000023% joined Starfleet that is millions of people to train, latest population of RL San Fran is less than 870,887 (2016), Land area 121.4 km squared

But in
THe Drumhead
Didn't Tarses say that he trained on Mars?
Maybe not all Starfleet people train on Earth?

You do know that millions of Asian kids are born in the US every year since the 90's right?
Yes.

There were many kids of Asian heritage that were born in the US before the 90s as well. George Takei was born in California several decades before the 90s. As a side note, during WWII, he and his family were sent to internment camps, even though Takei was an American.

As for Sulu, I don't know too much of his backstory. But he was born in San Francisco. And we learned in GEN that he found time to make a daughter. So in the TOS Trek universe, there is at least another generation of Sulus.

Not one with modern nukes.
With the assistance of the Vulcans cities can be rebuilt, according to First contact movie Earth gets it act together regarding poverty etc in 60 years, for that to happen most of the infrastructure must be pretty intact.

Sure, but we see historical buildings in those cities. I suppose those could be replicas rather than the originals but I doubt that was the intent of the people making the show.

Was San Francisco ever established on-screen as Sulu's city of origin? I'm not meaning cutting room floor, but actual on-screen.

Quote from Star Trek IV: THe Voyage Home.

(Location Bird of Prey Engineering)

KIRK: Where would we find these reactors, ...theoretically?
SPOCK: Nuclear power was widely used in naval vessels.

[now in "Bird-of-Prey bridge"]
SULU: San Francisco. I was born there.
MCCOY: It doesn't look all that different.
KIRK: Set us down in Golden Gate Park.

Seems pretty clear to me.

I have always thought (and still do think) that the Vulcans must have helped in the cleanup, recovery and rebuilding from WW3. There's no other way Earth could have possibly recovered so quickly, from a global thermonuclear war no less. You can't rebuild if there's nothing left to rebuild with...

Although we also know these things:

1) In ST:FC, Riker said there were very few governments left after the war. He didn't say NONE were left, just very few.

2) The USA was one of these governments. The war took place in 2053, yet in a TNG episode a US flag with 52 stars is seen, supposedly placing said flag anywhere between 2033 and 2079...

3) In ENT we learn that Vulcan had been holding back Earth's technology and exploration programs for decades. What better reason for them to do this, than as payback for services rendered?

I guess one of them might have been the Australians since they were the last to join the United Earth government it might have taken some convincing to make it worth their while.

And keep Humans as far away from the Andorians as possible? The Vulcans must have had a corrupt High Command leadership for some time.

I believe a common misconception which seems to be rooted in the TNG episode "Attached"

well, think about Earth.
what if
one of the old nation states,
say Australia,
had decided not to join the World Government
in 2150
would that have disqualified us as a Federation member

So Austrailia was an old nation state. Nothing about how it joined a world governemt. In fact sounds like all states joined in 2150 (a mere year before Archer departed and 3 years before the xindi attack)

Australia was just a hypothetical scenario, nothing more.

There’s no proof that they really DID refuse to join the United Earth government (indeed, there logically can’t be a world government unless every nation is a part of it). It was just thrown out as an example.
