Or to use an example that’s less likely to get panties in a twist: The RSPCA is politically correct, PETA is not.

That’s the traditional understanding of ‘political correctness.’ It describes the conduct, not necassarily the motivation or goal. So, I ask again...what do you consider a politically correct/incorrect objective?

I think you are falling into the common trap of understating the meaning of "politically correct". We aren't talking about a fad here, we aren't talking about something superficial that exists in the media.

People on one side are talking about disliking a trend in entertainment, a trend towards equality and fair representation. It's a petty and trivial reason to become angry and the fact they don't realise that is telling about how blinded many are by the established norms having become not just part of the landscape but the underlying fabric they only notice when it shifts.

On the other hand you have people whose very lives are defined by prejudice and bigotry and see being represented on screen as a priceless tool in changing the perceptions and marginalisation which makes their real lives a misery.

So no, the same can't reasonably be said.
