TLJ Actor Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico) Deletes Instagram After Abuse

And anyone that compares Rose to Jar-Jar has simply lost touch with reality.

THIS... Is this a recent thing? I don't remember any backlash against her character when TLJ came out.. In fact, I seem to remember her character as well as Tran both being celebrated for what they represented. To compare her to an ill-advised CGI character is beyond ridiculous. The new movies have given us more than just cookie-cutter stereotype characters. Rose has a backstory.. She has a purpose and an agenda against the First Order.

Then do it already.

And stop making this about you.

This is a discussion group. We are discussing. However, Ensign Ricky doesn’t have the time or energy to defend his position. In other words, you refuse to do the work. I’m calling you out. Put it on the table . Don’t post a link to a fucking blog. Don’t post a link to a fucking YouTube video. Say it in your own words.

Yeah, to reasonable people. But we aren't dealing with reasonable people. Just angry little men who make a lot of noise.

But if neither of those examples are the case, then maybe you could explain to the class the actual reason why you decided to take a thread about a real person’s bullying and harassment, and use it as an opportunity to bitch about a movie?
Now that is a great question.

Oh, and attempt to sic a horde on a different person. Like a typical, innocent, non-harasser.
Also great.

... so present a disproportion ate sense of their prevalence on the internet in the hopes no one will notice these films are doing just fine? Except, strangely, the one with the white male lead?
That is an interesting observation. I don't believe that Solo's race and sex have anything to do with why his film is underperforming, but it's interesting nonetheless. Ironic, if you will, in the modern sense of the word.

I know one of the narratives is that they should have cast the Ford impersonator. Armchair casting directors are the best casting directors.

I've already explained many of the reasons this movie sucks in other threads and I know I've already addressed her. it's exhausting to have to keep explaining it in every new topic. She only existed to give Finn something to do. Her social justice dialogue was painful. her parts of the movie were among the most pointless and boring, and when she was finished destroying any chance Finn had to be a hero, Johnson runs out of steam and puts her in the fridge.

None of my criticism has anything to do with her being Asian or a woman, but if it makes it easier keep telling yourselves that. I know I'm not a racist, and I really can't even begin to understand why anybody would hate or resent women, especially in this day and age. But say what you want; I can dismiss things too.

I know I'm not a racist, and I really can't even begin to understand why anybody would even still hate or resent women in this day and age. But say what you want; I can dismiss things too.

None of that answers my questions Ricky.

If Instagram (and their parent company Facebook) would put in some actual effort into the prevention of cyber-bullying, that'd be swell. They'd need to start giving a damn first, of course. Alternatively, they should be pressured into doing so.

What Kelly Marie went through was ugly enough, but I've seen examples of women being openly called "whores" and threatened with violence, both on Instagram and FB.
Given to VOLUME of Posts - that's often easier said then done. (Again, I wish it would happen, but the manpower needed is cost prohibitive.)

Facebook (and presumably this applies to Instagram as well) did accidentally reveal that their harassment policy itself is pretty lax by design.

For eg. White supremacy is explicitly banned, but white nationalism isn’t.

The whole thing is ridiculously easy to game.

An excellent article about the fandom.

Can we all be honest and admit that these aren't just fans, this is just men. Men angry that their toy has to be shared with women and minorities now.
No, because female and minority fans also will post a similar type of abuse at those involved in producing a film they don't like as well. It's not just a 'male issue' here. Do you really think the hate Jake Loyd received for his role in TPM ONLY came from White men?

This is not an issue that suddenly sprang up with regard to a small segment of the fanbase -m it's ALWAYS been there. Again, Social Media (and the anonymity and broad outreach it provides) just make it easier for these idiots to spout off.

Only? No.

Mostly, however? I’d be confident enough to place money on it.

Especially in Christensen’s case. I was there, and it most definitely wasn’t the ladies picking on him. Something that men, unsurprisingly, promptly used to mock him.

This is vile and reprehensible. Sure Rose is a poorly written one dimensional character created just to give Finn someone to play with while Rey was away, and sure Tran may have turned in a less than inspiring performance that became more and more grating as the film wore on; But that is no excuse for personally attacking the poor woman.

Personally attack the shitty, hack writer who made her that way. You know, the baby faced guy with beady eyes and the big giant forehead.
I would suggest that a healthy person never feels a need to personally attack someone who creates or portrays a character that doesn't meet their objective standards.

I thought it was nice that one of the movies actually had something to say about world.
The Star Wars universe has always been portrayed as being particularly brutal for the poor and disadvantaged. The Republic and the Jedi ignored the situation, the Rebels pursued the defeat of the Empire and hoped it would correct the inequality, and the New Republic seems to have simply become corrupt in rapid fashion. It's nice to take a minute to focus on the horribleness of the galaxy far, far, away, and create a new ethos for a nascent Resistance movement.

Probably a lot of socialism in the star wars universe contributed to this

‘Slavery is bad’ was certainly a nice upgrade from ‘slavery isn’t nice, but oh well.’

Bit worrying that it’s been relegated to ‘SJW talk’ though. What exactly are you yanks hiding over there?

Seriously. What is it with all of this "SJW this!" and "SJW that?" At its heart, when looking at the OT, isn't the idea of a Rebellion all about restoring freedom and justice to the galaxy? Doesn't that mean freedom and justice for all? Not just the white human-looking people (and their Wookie)?
