TLJ Actor Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico) Deletes Instagram After Abuse

It's the new normal.
Not really. There have always been assholes, bullies, taunters. The Internet did not create these. They're just inhabiting spaces, lurking in the present landscape, just as they always did. What's frustrating to the more liberal-minded among us is simply the persistence of bigoted, hateful attitudes. We just have to accept that not everyone's ready to move ahead, and remind ourselves that there's always been a retrograde element to society.

Person #1: But...but...it’s always been that way! And other fandoms are also toxic!

Person #2: Oh, well I guess that means you don’t need to partake in any self-reflection, do anything to address inappropriate behaviour, or just basically act like a nice human being. Everything is totally fine.

Person #1: ...

Person #1: ...

Person #1: Do you want to hear about how TLJ made me fee-?

Person #2: No!

Anyone with an ounce of decency would be. Not seemingly take glee from it and continue to take shots at the woman and other actresses they hate for no other reason than being a petty, small minded person. I don't know what would drive anyone to do that, except for being an utterly pathetic loser angry at a movie for not being what they wanted.

These people aren't fans of Star Wars, they think it belongs to them. Like spoiled children throwing a fit because other people exist and they're forced to share what never even belonged to them. Just vile, despicable wastes of life and effort. They ruin fandom for others, which probably pleases them because it chases others away.

People like this are just going to lead us down the path of you having to link your official identity to your social media accounts in years to come.

I'm all for freedom of speech and personal freedoms but things like this are just becoming too commonplace online, bullying, abuse, racism, you name it. People have even taken their own lives over these nasty pieces of shit spouting their bile.

Why should these weak (and that's what they are, weak) keyboard warriors be allowed to get away with such things? If I gave a stranger death threats or abuse in the street or outside their home I'd expect to feel the arm of the law. I'm not saying I want the law changing but it's inevitable that measures like this will end up being taken at some point, and we'll look back on these days as the 'Wild West' of the internet.

If Instagram (and their parent company Facebook) would put in some actual effort into the prevention of cyber-bullying, that'd be swell. They'd need to start giving a damn first, of course. Alternatively, they should be pressured into doing so.

What Kelly Marie went through was ugly enough, but I've seen examples of women being openly called "whores" and threatened with violence, both on Instagram and FB.

Movie was not as bad as I was expecting from one lot of reports, not as good as the other...there’s some story problems, and an idea that works on the page just not working on screen (running away just out of range till the fuel gives out...) because of the heavier than usual naval film stuff.
But...
I liked Rose. Like I have liked all the new guys more than the story they have been in.
But today’s wonderful internet reminds me that not only are opinions like assholes, but confusingly some people are aliens with odd digestive systems, and that even the assholes have opinions. And everyone. Everyone. Turns into an antagonistic keyboard warrior.
Makes me wish for the days of people having to at least pay for a stamp to post their opinions to starburst, and walk and buy the mag to read them...or if they were really out there, start a fanzine.
Poor kid. Hope she’s as generally sensible as it seems and doesn’t let it get to her now she’s turned off the noise.

Oh I definitely feel pity for Tran's sad, unfortunate situation.

I hated The Last Jedi. I've seen it twice and thought it was even more dreadful on my second viewing, but I wouldn't dream of abusing the people who were involved in the making of it. I'd even think twice about criticising it to them on social media.

I don’t see how the harassment was necessarily racist and sexist! Stop making everything about politics.

Not to distract from those are deserve culpability (the dirtbags harrassing her ), but it was my understanding that you could turn off commenting on Instagram posts? I wonder if she did and if they found ways around it. Which would be even more pathetic

That’s sort of what she’s done. It’s now a private account.

Turning off comments can be a bit of a losing game. It doesn’t help with DM’s and people tagging you into things, and can become yet another weapon to bludgeon you with.

Sheesh. You’d think Instagram would have a filtering system where you couldn’t DM a public account like that (think verified business/personality) without them enabling it; same with tagging.

This is nuts

In the past people would just send racist and sexist and just evil types of fan mail or even death threats so it's true this isn't a new thing. I don't see how people can be such a asshole to someone just because they don't like a movie they are end or show. Then you toss in the stalkers.

No, its not a new thing. I think it’s anplified by the internet. We’ve got groups now for wanting the head of Kathleen Kennedy or Kelly Marie Tran Ruined Star Wars. It’s easier to find people who agree with you. You may have had the occasional hate mail or death threat. Now you might get a concentrated effort.

Fortunately Pom Klementieff isn't being subjected to similarly heartless, racist and misogynistic behavior, even though they both share essentially the same fan base.
It could have something to do with her character not totally sucking; But that's just speculation and is in no way an excuse for such misdirected cruelty.

Hashtag: Direct it at Johnson.

Direct it at no one like a reasonable adult. They made a Star Wars movie that you didn't like, too bad.
