"5 Reasons Kathleen Kennedy Needs To Step Down From Lucasfilm" By John Campea

Why would Han and Leia name their own child after Obi-Wan? That never made any sense to me. Han and Obi-Wan merely got on each other's nerves. Leia never met him. So . . . why name their kid after him?

I've asked myself the same question. Why not Bail Solo? Anakin Solo? Or Luke Solo for that?

Are all y'all puzzled by "Ben" yourself named after the closest family member?

Yeah, that is the best summary of the current situation I have seen yet.

"Ben" was a false name adopted due to Order 66, of a man they never got to know and watched commit suicide by lightsaber. The fact Kylo has turned out so messed up isn't so surprising.

For all we know, Ben is a common name in the Star Wars galaxy, like Bail.

Well, Han isn't the sentimental type, and Leia never knew him at all. It's a big fandom/nostalgia/etc shout out to have a kid named after characters, but it just seems so weird.
 It's a long-standing standard trope, as has already been mentioned upthread. So much in Star Wars always was a pastiche of standard tropes.

He saved their lives. That is enough of a reason in fiction.

Well, that explains that I guess. Bail Organa had been saving Leia's life from day one, and naming her son for him would've been a fitting tribute. Kenobi did save them by sacrificing himself to buy them time to get off the Death Star, but one could argue that during the Rebellion they were saved countless times by all kinds of people. Why not Mon Mothma? Akbar? Dodonna? Wedge?

Naming Kylo Ren after Kenobi was fan service, which is something only the old fans are supposedly to like or demand. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it felt odd to me that Leia and Han would name their son Ben when Han had little interaction with him. If Kylo had been Luke's son, just like the EU, no problem.

Of course in the real world people name their children based on all kinds of reasons, but when you are naming a character as a call back to a past film or past character I didn't feel Kenobi had been in their lives long enough to get that honor, unlike Luke, where Ben was an integral-if not the integral-character in Luke's life.

I am truly baffled by why this is a question. Ben saved them from the Empire, from a great evil, and Leia, especially, was saved from torture and death. And, what significance is Bail to Han? If we are attaching great significance to a name. Why is Luke and Leia significant to Padme? It's a long, and frankly convoluted, rabbit hole this goes towards.

As far as lore go, I am genuinely curious as to what stories Bail told Leia about Ben Kenobi. That, even without her meeting him, she had more exposure than is shown.

*quote from Highlander, and I'll give you only one guess as to which one it is*

I can't believe there is this much debate over his first name. I would think the real argument would be over his last.
