My ranking of the SW films:

The Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Solo
Rogue One
Revenge of the Sith
The Force Awakens
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace
The Last Jedi
Nice list. I can't rank Solo yet, but I'd have to flip TPM and TFA and put TLJ equal to RO.

I find it MOST amusing to see the same people who bitched about George Lucas and the prequels now screaming Kathleen Kennedy is the anti-Christ and Lucas should buy back Lucasfilm and take back over...……...Some people are just always angry.
Yup. I'm seeing the same thing. To them I would say just enjoy the originals and pretend these new movies don't exist. If they bother you that much, don't watch them. I know one person who feels that way about everything that's come out since 1977.

This movie is sort of the opposite of TLJ which seemed to want to, for better or worse, go out of its way to subvert fan expectations. This one delivered pretty much what one would expect, again, perhaps to a fault. It's novel though to see a story not about the Force and chosen ones and prophecies and destinies and what not and just a solid adventure.

The opening text reminded me a little of Blade Runner but I don't know if that was because it was me or them channeling Harrison Ford.

As far as Maul goes, I thought it was really dumb when they brought him back in the cartoons just in principle. What? He survived? Dumb... But then his story ended up really sprawling and interesting and I really enjoyed it as it unfolded. Definitely could see how people watching the movie would be like WTF though.

So Lando being pansexual doesn't mean he's aroused by cookware? Learn something new every day...

Saw it this morning and really liked it. It wasn't amazing, but it was still pretty fun.
The whole cast did a really good job with Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover both doing a great job with their characters. I'm a huge fan of both Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, and they were both great here too, Beckett and Qi'ra were nice additions to the Star Wars universe. I was a bit disappointed we didn't get more with Rio, Val, and especially L3.
Of the supporting characters Phoebe Waller-Bridge's L3 was a standout, it was interesting to see a droid who actually spoke out against their treatment the way she did. I guess we also now know why the C-3P0 thought the computer was so rude in The Empire Strikes Back.
I have to admit, the story wasn't really anything groundbreaking, but it was still a fun little adventure. It was nice to get a story that wasn't about saving the universe for once.
There were several surprising references and cameos in this I did not expect. I was really shocked by Maul's appearance, I had heard there was a connection to The Clone Wars and Rebels and once they were referring to Qi'ra and Vos's mysterious boss, I figured they would be the connection. I honestly had expected it to be Hondo, since he was the first criminal from the animated series to come to mind for me, so I was really, really shocked when it turned out it was Maul. The reference to Teras Kasi, and the appearance of Two Tubes from Rogue One were also unexpected, although not as big of shocks for me as Maul.
It gets a sold A rating from me.

IGN said it was Benthic aka Two Tubes, but I just checked Wookiepedia, and it says it's another member of the same race.

Wookiepedia only goes on facts, even if they're identical they won't change it unless it's said so in a canon source, or by a remember of LucasFilm.

But that guy is wearing the exact some outfit, using the exact same rifle and even has the exact same accessories on his costume as Benthic.

Further, the idea that Padme, a woman who went back to Naboo with little help to liberate her planet, who stood against assassins in support of the Military Creation Act, who wasn't afraid to press Palpatine to end the war and relinquish his powers or step down, and then who went to Mustafar to confront Anakin would die of a 'broken heart'. Not after giving birth. She would fight like hell to protect them against Anakin and the Emperor.
Perhaps it isn't quite that simple.
In my head canon, Palpatine used the Force to manipulate the Midichlorians into killing Padme, like he talks about in the conversation about Darth Plageus in the opera house scene. The medical droid just says "broken heart" because its programming can not explain her death any other way.

I rank AOTC slightly higher for Obi Wan's fabulous hair alone...……….:nyah:
Except for the reshoot hair and beard, which were atrocious. I've never understood why these movies that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make so often whiff it on the reshoot hair. C'mon guys, at least try to match it.

His reshoot wig in TPM was even worse...…….That was before made pick-ups part of the shooting schedule from the start. Even now they run into problems like Superman's mustache. ;-)

TUESDAY: $6.8 million. Word of mouth is doing nothing for this movie.

I feel so bad for Ron Howard, directed so many stinkers over the years, hasn't had a hit since The Da Vinci Code (2006), and the only really good film he made since Frost/Nixon a decade ago, Rush (a really great sports drama from 2013) was seen by a total of ten people.

Yeah but as he himself pointed out, this may be a low-earning Star Wars movie but it's a new personal best box office opening for him.

Sure, but only the opening. The Da Vinci Code will remain his biggest hit by a big margin. 758 mil. globally. Solo may yet beat it domestically, but when you factor in inflation, it won't come close.

So...out of curiosity, are certain fans still claiming that Disney has issued some kind of ban on mentioning prequel material or has this movie finally convinced them otherwise? Because I'm pretty sure that between the various prequel name drops and an appearance by Mr. Hornhead McTattooedFace himself this movie should put that idea to bed forever.

On a related note, I like how the Aurra Sing name drop simultaneously establishes how dangerous Beckett is, that he's probably a backstabver, but also leaves open the possibility that he's full of crap. "I didn't kill her, I just pushed her. The fall probably killed her."

Point 1) Aurra Sing isn't the clumsy type, nor is she naive and she prefers ranged weapons over hand-to-hand, so the only way Beckett could have ever gotten into a position where pushing her was even possible is if he was within her confidence and she turned her back on him.
Point 2) "The fall probably killed her." This implies that he didn't stick around to check, so she could still be alive.
Point 3) While he's happy to claim credit for the kill, instead of embellishing his victory as most in his line of work would, he's playing it down. Which to me suggests some combination of false modesty as a way to gain trust and possibly edging his bets just in case she ever pops up again (she survived this after all!) Indeed, that whole thing reeks of a double cross.

Also, random observation: Lando owes her money. That means she's either a better card player than he is (interesting!) or at some point, he hired her for a job and didn't pay her. Given he her speciality is assassination, one has to wonder who Lando wanted dead...

Wouldn’t RO featuring Mustafar and Jimmy Smits-as-a-character-not-even-named-until-the-PT have already confirmed that?

Oh, who am I kidding. Of course ‘some people’ wouldn’t be convinced by that.

Just trying to highlight the bright side is all. :)

It seems that the only bright side is that the movie apparently doesn't suck. I'll know on Saturday when I finally see it...

... Together with 15 other people, from the looks of it. :shifty:

(and to think my second viewing of TLJ was in a sold out theater ten days into release)
