Do you play as the opposite sex in games?

I'm another person who plays as a female character in games where there's either the option to play as a character of either gender or there isn't a set defined protagonist.

For example, I have only ever played the Mass Effect games with Fem!Shep, and made my player character in Kingdoms of Amalur a female Dark Elf assassin-mage.

I also play Fallout 3 as a girl.

I rather like the name Aribeth (from Neverwinter Nights. The good one) so I use it when I play female characters. For example, in Mass Effect, my Shepherd was Aribeth Shepherd. Having a first name is pretty pointless when it's never used, though. If the name can be completely made up, I go for Aribeth Faansworth (Futurama reference:techman:)

Not often. If there is a choice my first choice is always as a male. If I playthrough it again I'll usually go for a female character. I've done the similar thing with the two MMOs I've played where my main is male and when I create additional characters I mix up the genders.

Pretty much this. On LOTRO my main is an irritable (male) dwarf (i dont recall if there is a female option) but my secondary is a woman.
Back when I played NN I was only ever a dude (damn, i miss that game!!!) but when i tried out KOTOR I played both for shits and giggles.
I really don't do much gaming anymore, I like have no time.

Tried, just doesn't feel right.

Another thing that's kind of funny with games is RPG's with multiple option voice prompts, I have tried, I really have to be "the asshole Psycho" in those games and I just can't do it, I end up feeling so bad that I can't maintain it lol.

Oh, most of my playthroughs tend to be fairly decent people, but for a laugh, I did go through Dragon Age: Origins on one run as the most mean spirited, selfish person as I possibly could. Unvoiced (unfortunately), but it had it's moments. I think I drove off or killed quite a few people in it.

I play every character of Borderlands 1, 2, pre sequel so yep I play the females too.

Also with Saints Row 3 and 4 I play females quite often. There are three male and three female character options so I play them all.

If the game has a character creator or if the difference between characters is purely cosmetic, I'll usually stick with male. However if there's a difference between characters/different classes etc, I'll go with whichever supports my preferred play style best and/or has whatever I consider to be the the best abilities, regardless of gender.

What about games where you are forced to be female like Tomb Raider or Nier Automata? I know most people won't be upset with no choice there but I have bumped into people that have avoided those games just because of the no male option.

When I played City of Heroes I almost always played a female character. I guess I felt if I was going to play for a couple hours I wanted something nice to look at. :)

But seriously when I designed a character I tried to be tasteful, with only the character Princess of Mars being sexualized (Considering the source material I think I was justified in that one instance).

When it comes to my PBEMs a majority of the GNPCs are female in part because on average most players run males and I guess I try to balance things out a bit. In my Star Trek game the captain is a woman, Devin Hadenbeer. When it comes to table top it's 50/50.

Oh, and I'm a male, by the way. :)

I've never been much into video games but I have played as MS Packman at the Arcade many times. Also Duck Hunt and Space Invaders in theory could be women doing the shooting.

Doesn't bother me at all, and if anyone here is the kind of person that is bothered by that, then I don't care to know you. It's a video game for God's sake.

Very amused by all these butthurt fucktards complaining about a woman being on the cover of Battlefield V.

There is, well to me, an advantage to playing a woman, I tend to play the slow and long way and so I have to look at my character quite a long time, if that character is a nice looking/badass female it might actually be nicer than looking at some buff dude's hairy arse.. :rommie:

Plundered Hearts: If you're male, then you have no choice. It's an interactive bodice-ripper, shamelessly riffing off all the cliches of "supermarket porn" romance novels, and as such, the protagonist is female.

Leather Goddesses of Phobos: The game text varies, not just according to the gender you select for your character (by the simple expedient of which restroom you enter in the prologue scene), but also on whether you set the "naughtiness level" to "Tame," "Suggestive," or "Lewd."

In multiplayer games I think of it more as an avatar for the player than a character, so I set the gender accordingly. In single player games, sure, occasionally. Not really much different than watching a TV show or a movie with a female protagonist, or reading a book with a female perspective character.

I played the hell out of Leather Goddesses of Phobos in the day. Being a text adventure it was very light on resources. Loved that game.

I'm totally open to either, really. Sometimes I'll set it to male in a sense of 'this is a game where I kind of want to feel like myself', but usually I pick based on what looks the best (for instance, in Splatoon the male's avatar's hair is terrible, so it's female avatar all the way - splatoon 2 gives more options there).

And back when I played D&D (specifically, a nonstandard mix of first edition with supplements and early AD&D), my secondary character (a human wizardress of royal blood) was the wife of my primary character (a high-level fighter/magic-user elf).

Haven't played that in years. Mainly because solitaire gets old fairly quickly, and I had nobody to play with (and several rabidly Fundamentalist friends who were convinced it was crypto-Satanic).

Being one, I usually will choose male. But, if I can have more then once character, I will sometimes make a female.
If there are different stats associated to different characters, then I choose based on the stats I want/need, and I'll play whomever.

Never bothered me. I Love the Tomb Raider games! If the character is female, then ok.
