Sometimes a uniform color is dictated more by what color looks better on the actor, even though in-universe it would make more sense for them to have a different color. Then they'll make some hand-wavey explanation about that particular character's job/division/whatever. That's why Data had yellow instead of blue even though his role is essentially the resident science geek.Wasn't Charlene Masters a blueshirt engineer? She must have been in charge of the Enterprise Spore Drive.![]()
I hope Dr. Philip Boyce is still serving on the Enterprise in 2257 or even Dr. Mark Piper. I want to see an aging and cranky guy with a "get off my lawn" attitude dressed in this new uniform design.
I look at this and I just can't get excited.I see this, and God I should be a lot more excited than I am. It just seems like they are building stories off of canon hooks instead of them coming organically from a story.
I gave up watching them before they skitted over to the MU. The show was just not worthwhile on any level.
Will I watch the first episode, whenever it returns, to see Pike and company aboard the Enterprise? I don't doubt it, as long as it's free (it will be).
There's no reason to get excited just because they show some folks in the old-style red and gold Trek uniforms, though - you can still see them in the Abrams films.![]()
What was the reason behind the holo communicator thing?Right, I have read that and thought it was clever. Same for the explanation of why the Enterprise didn’t have the proto hologram and just used the main viewer.
And yet, I still don’t think we’ll see the Discovery crew in full time TOS colors.
But I also think we collectively are putting a greater importance on the canon status of the novels. The Harberts and Berg aren’t beholden to them.
The lack of imagination or design talent brought to that project annoys me greatly. I'm not concerned with them changing it, as such. Of course they're going to change it.I have chosen not to watch season 2 as I am not interested in seeing them completely bastardise the original Enterprise
Anybody else think the "insufficient facts" line from Spock is a nod to the haters?![]()
Too much bandwidth IIRC. Maybe something to do with security issues. I'll have to re-read.What was the reason behind the holo communicator thing?

I am trying hard to re think my attitudes of late. Perhaps if there is a logical explanation I should be more open to all these visual changes.Too much bandwidth IIRC. Maybe something to do with security issues. I'll have to re-read.
So why do you care?
^ It would make sense that Scotty's primary specialty would be applications physics and not machinery and mechanics.
There isn't always a logical explanation that will satisfy. Star Trek isn't an historical recreation that demands scrutiny to the highest detail. More that is a visual medium using the contemporary tools that are available.I am trying hard to re think my attitudes of late. For instance, in video games, should the same characters look identical across every series?

Or, is it reasonable for game studios expand the look and functionality as better tools become available?

I disagree. I think they changed things by adding more details in to it.DIS just changed things - to the point they don't share any properties with their original designs anymore. That's bad.
Not being overly familiar with the Halo-Lore: This is exactly the type of "updating" I would be extremely okay with. In each cases, they kept the basic lines. Hell, they even included all the same details: The basic shape of the helmet, the weird shoulder/neck-piece. They basically only added further detail, and slightly adapted the change to accomodate the new details.
What Discovery did, was chaning the entire design language. In this case: Imagine the Halo-guy suddenly not wearing a helmet anymore, and his suit not being technological, but an intricately detailed middle aged fantasy suit with spikes and ornaments. It would essentially be an entirely new thing, and not just an "update".
I'm hella' okay with "updating" stuff. The TMP Enterprise and klingon ships were vastly more detailed than the TOS ones. But they were visibly the same. Just a more detailed rendition. Even the original klingon re-design (adding make-up) was mostly acceptable, because it was solely adding something, that wasn't too hard to imagine that should have already been there originally, but couldn't for budgetary/technological/resolution-related reasons. DIS just changed things - to the point they don't share any properties with their original designs anymore. That's bad.
Aside from "The Cage" which isn't canon...
