GR vs. JJ

Star Trek is about a story, not a universe or continuity. Can we at least agree on that?
No it's not "about a story". There are Star Trek stories, but there is no Star Trek story. The stories take place in a "universe" and a "continuity".

Would it help if I said Star Trek, like any other tv show or movie is about the story first and foremost? This is like pulling teeth.

No it would not help. Because you keep arguing that Star Trek is a story but failing to actually say what the story is.

All movies have stories. Don't they? All Star Trek tv episodes have stories, don't they? What's not to understand?

What exactly are you after? You're all over the place. You've held several conflicting opinions in an attempt to sound deep or something.
There is no one formula. Some entertainment is story driven. Some are character driven. Others are about the visuals. All can succeed or fail.

This is like a performance of "Who's On First?", only instead of being hilarious, it's painful and irritating.

Valenti if you have a point, make it.

TOS was mainly plot driven with some kind of moral dilemma.
My point is that the JJ writers don't know how to write a Star Trek story.
They are good writers, but their Star Trek stories suck. Same thing holds for Star Wars, and who is the ring leader for both franchises - yes, you guessed it - JJ.

Star Trek is a setting, based on certain premises, in which a great many stories have been told by a great many creative folk.

The Trek property has been seen over time as expressing a certain broad set of values, but there's never been absolute agreement among its many creators and contributors as to precisely what those values are in every specific - and there's certainly no such fixed consensus among its fans and followers.

As noted elsewhere, this is not unique in movies or tv or books or comics. I'm old enough to have lived through at least eight different live-action versions of SUPERMAN, at least five different PLANET OF THE APES timelines, multiple versions of THE MUMMY and ZORRO and TARZAN, etc.

I KNOW who you are!!

Cue noble horns theme:

"I have married a hundred times, captain. Selected, loved, cherished. Caressed a smoothness, inhaled a brief fragrance. Then age… death… the taste of dust."

Well, you're wrong. And since you keep insisting on not actually saying what Star Trek's story is, is there any other point to this topic?

How many Star Wars "stories" has JJ written?

So this was two pages just to get back to insulting JJ Trek?

You are of course entitled to your opinion. Others share it. Some people think Gene's shit didn't stink. I get it.

I guess I'm fortunate because I've found something to enjoy in all of it. Some to greater or lesser degrees, but still, all of it.

Perhaps that makes me less discerning, less critical? Who cares? I have a metric fuck-ton of Star Trek that I can go and enjoy all the time, including new stuff that's still being made.

I win!

;)

And Star Trek loses. OK.
