Enterprise Refit Deck Layout

DanGovier

I've been watching and re-watching TMP/TWOK/TSFS to aid in my Enteprise VR project, and it seems to be quite clear that what is said and seen on screen doesn't reflect the typically accepted deck layout, where decks A, B and C are all housed within the bridge dome/teardrop structure.

In TWOK Kirk clearly exits the turbolift on D Deck to go to his quarters, which until re-watching TSFS I assumed was the first proper deck immediately under the officer's lounge. However, in TSFS Checkov states:

"CHEKOV: An energy reading from 'C' deck ...from inside Mister Spock's quarters."

In addition to this, the graphic shown on the computer console clearly shows the position of Spock's quarters being below and to the rear of the officer's lounge.

So the only way that is possible is if the bridge dome/teardrop only contain decks A and B, with B containing the Captain's Ready Room, Briefing Room and Officer's Mess/Lounge. I would personally approve of that being the case because it fits perfectly with my own scale findings, but commercial publications like Mr Scott's Guide stick with the 3 decks approach.

What do you guys think? Has this been hashed out before?

Sorry, but doesn't the graphic show Spock's quarters as being in the brig? Strange yes, but as a Vulcan perhaps the spartan environment is more to his chosing than regular officer's digs.

If faced with a dilemma between what's on screen and what makes sense, go with the latter . It's possible that having his brain eaten might have made Chekov dysphasic though. He certainly acts like a moron after TWoK.

I have nothing against Kirk living on Deck 4 in ST2:TWoK while Spock lives on Deck 3 - Kirk is but a guest, to be shoved in wherever he fits. OTOH, it nicely fits that top officers would be on Deck 3 customarily, as per McCoy's door plate in TOS (3F127), or that of Janice Rand (3C46 and 3F125) who supposedly lives next door to the CO for practical reasons.

I do have a problem with Spock's quarters being behind and below the aft Lounge windows, though: the diagram that shows the blip in ST3 cannot show any such Lounge because it deals with a ship that lacked said Lounge altogether. Since the blip apparently is at least several hundred meters away from Kirk's current ship, I wouldn't sweat deck precision!

It's pretty much a case of the writer putting any old letter into the script without any thought. OTOH, I recall Nemesis, Star Trek and Into Darkness having similar issues where there was a bottomless pit on deck 29, sickbay was on deck 7 apparently in the neck of the ship, and the USS Vengeance having deck 15 in the engineering section despite the ship being miles long and that should have been in the saucer.

So the only way that is possible is if the bridge dome/teardrop only contain decks A and B, with B containing the Captain's Ready Room, Briefing Room and Officer's Mess/Lounge.
Where did you get the idea that Kirk had a Ready Room on refit Enterprise? If he had one, why would he take Decker all the way down to his personal quarters to have a private chat with him in TMP?

He needed to check that time dilation hadn't affected his toupee.

The one does not preclude the other I suppose . A functional starship would need those rooms at some point although Kirk's desk implies that his office could be in his quarters. They might have multiple briefing rooms instead.

Kirk's a visiting admiral, Decker the ship's CO. The ready room/captain's office facilities would all be Decker's "spaces," with his fish and kid's pictures on the fridge.

Certainly at the start of the movie for the "demotion," and to a lesser degree throughout, it makes sense for Kirk to speak to Decker in Kirk's quarters.

That's a fair point, and one I hadn't considered, but I think having a CO office on the ship is fairly necessary regardless. Unless I'm mistaken, every other Federation starship including the NX-01 has one, so it's a pretty standard addition.

Well, the number of decks on the ship is inconsistent for one thing. In the RED ALERT graphic seen in TWOK but created for TMP (seen in trailers for) deck 4 is the one just above the widest point of the saucer, but the INTRUDER ALERT panel (seen in TWOK after "Energize defense fields", but again created for TMP) calls out the floorplan as being deck 5, but shows it at the height of Deck 4. Oops.

For me the fact that a Captain's Ready Room was never seen or mentioned in TOS or in any of the movies seems pretty definitive. And there's also the fact that Kirk has a desk in his quarters in both versions of the ship.

Did Archer really have a Ready Room on Enterprise? I don't remember one, but I haven't watched that show in forever.

Archer had a ready room, but I think it was officially called the captain's office. I'd have to rewatch to know for sure.

It's also worth pointing out that the deck plans seen in the first 3 movies are (with the exception of the "energize defence fields one" you mention) from the old Franz Joseph Enterprise deck plans, which depict the ship as it appeared in the classic series not the movies. In WoK, you see a graphic of the secondary hull showing where the ship was hit, but it's full of crew quarters and not the big engineering room we see get hit.

Archer had one just off of the bridge, in a similar way to the Enterprise D and Voyager. Doing a bit of reading (Memory Alpha - am I allowed to quote that here?), it would appear that the concept of a ready room was introduced in TNG, and Roddenberry approved of the idea because it fit with navy tradition. So I guess that would make the NX-01 ready room a retcon, but one that makes perfect sense I feel. Another thing to consider is McCoy had his own office, and I believe Scotty did too? (The chief engineer does have an office on the Galaxy class)

Perhaps Kirk simply preferred the comfort and informality of his quarters, and left the CO office unused or repurposed?

I think the approach I favor is to have a generic CO office next to the briefing room, but not have it set up as Kirk's room specifically.

Observing the differences in NCC-1701 interiors under command of Pike and Kirk, we might decide there was a redecorating - OR we could argue that there still is this luxurious cabin/office complex just below the bridge and next to a big briefing room, as seen in "The Cage", but that this Deck 2 facility has been abandoned by Kirk and turned into VIP accommodations as per "The Enterprise Incident".

If Kirk wanted to use his Ready Room, he'd have to knock on the visiting flag officer's or diplomat's door now (a door that once was Pike's), and he won't. Let lying Ferrises and Foxes sleep, Kirk can work from his cabin/office. Just like Picard, who just happened to have a longer distance from the bridge to said cabin and needed the bridge-adjacent room more.
