back on topic..
I think the Classic era Had what we could tell, no real BIG universal changes, where timelines were concerned. Some small pockets of things happening, but for the most part, and probably because the Time Lords kept all that in check, up to the 1996 movie, excluding comics and novella, The Classic era was for the most part stable in terms of time line. The Castrovalva Incident was entropy taking out a significant portion of the known universe, while other then that, the time line of all the events we could tell were in tact.
With STAR TREK the Kelvin reboot, the universe was changed by one Seminole event, leading to a new time line where things were similar to the original, yet different. I am not saying it's proof, however one could make an argument that the Changes to the universe via the time war, made a Kelvin timeline that the new series picked up with, and that would explain a lot of differences in the Doctor's TARDIS ala The Christmas special showing the David Bradley TARDIS being much different to the original Hartnell version. The Tenth planet console room looked a lot different and did not include the hexagon roundels like the Curator's under-gallery.
So I can compile a lot of differences which could make a case for a Kelvin timeline, but then again, This is a thread about why it could, why it can't it doesn't matter, if this is prime timeline, the changes can be blamed on the time war, and yet making this Nu-Who a Kelvin universe can also work, and too can be blamed on the time war.
The implication of which, either way probably ends up with the same result. But then again, that does leave open a universe somewhere out there, were the time war never happened, and the classic universe kept going according to pattern.. I wonder if the Doctor ended at his final regeneration and without a War Doctor, and so on, the Classic Doctor probably would have regenerated into very different people.
All the same, the most nagging thing in my mind from NuWho is the Curator.. Even the back of the toy package has the quote about wearing old faces, but just the favourites, but then again if they were ever to take the series back to a familiar face and it be a recast of Tom Baker (like a David Bradley) who the heck could pull off a successful Young Tom Baker?? I am stumped here.. I can't see anyone who has that type of cadence and drawl in their speech to pull off his subtle pauses and quick whit comments. IS there a British Actor out there that could possibly pull that off??? Who knows. But if NuWho is now a Kelvin time line, that would explain Clara being involved all the way back to the 1st Doctor, which never really happened in the classic time line. If the new timeline rewrites classic Whovian history, is that not then creating a new time line and universe? I am perplexed by canonicity terms of those who say the new show is canon, and yet if you know about how time is supposed to work, then there should have been multiple new time lines since the 1996 movie that have happened since the time war. Clara, and so on... in NuWho. It's like a paradox.. Both could be true, like a quantum particle, but only one choice leads to a solidified path. So I put it like this for the sake of pondering the thread question. Had the Time War not occurred would the Whovian universe be the same as the classic, or could they have moved into the new series with a successful continuation? The Time War was a great plot, don't get me wrong. It made for a fascinating story to follow, last of the time lords, the death of Gallifrey and the Daleks being all but wiped from existence.
I just like to hypothesize on things like this as an amusing idea.. If NuWho is a Kelvin timeline then what did the prime time line continue as? Did the Doctor kick off after 12? Who would inherit the Doctor's Type 40? Would the show go on without the Doctor? Or would they have given him more Regens again, but happen differently? Would they have brought back the Rani? ( miss her) and what would The Imperial Daleks look like? Would the Daleks still be in a Civil War like the Sontarans and Rutans eternal struggle? Who knows.. I know one thing.. I would love to see the New series give us a classic and yet (facially Updated) Black and silver suited Sontaran. I Also preferred the 80s Cybermen the best.. love to see them back. As freaky as the 10th Planet version was as Bill, I would prefer them give us a slightly updated and full human body with augmented strength and hands 80s Cybers.. I like them more so then the super robots with brain of a human ver. Seems too robotic and not enough Cyber-humanoid. when you think of Cyber-Men it almost implies actual bodies, just cyber enhanced, not a robot-human head cyber combo. I always thought that the 80s Cybermen were allot more freaky because of that. Especially that clear mouth piece where you could see the human mouth moving under the helmet.
