News Discovery New Character Breakdowns

You jest, but sites such as http://medievalpoc.tumblr.com/ have started documenting the presence of non-white people in historical works of art, and it might be surprising just how much is out there. Even in some cases, the popular presentation of images has had people of color cropped out when compared to the original full image.

Absolutely, I jested only in part, white washing is far from a new phenomenon. After all, what colour was Jesus?

what colour was Jesus
some say green, but...

White and Black and Brown and who knows what else since he is most likely a fictional character.

Sighs....ok, what colour would Jesus be on the balance of probability should we make the assumption he did in fact exist as portrayed?

Better? :nyah:

White of course since he was born here in America until the Indians killed him. The Mormons have it figured out.:)

One of the aspects is also levels...for people in living memory, seeing a person of colour (to use the Americanism) was a remarkable event, even in London. East London no less. Finsbury Park May have had a black MP in the late nineteenth century, but it’s still so stanoutish as to appear strange and alien to children of the thirties, seeing a dark-skinned person. That has a hard time sitting next to current media portrayals, which leads to discussion, as well as the more...bizarre political things. (If no one caught the news story about the BNP puppet show involving a lion telling the story of Boudicea -yes I know, Boudicca, but not this time - then you missed a true through the looking glass moment to laugh at.)
There’s always a narrative or two, sadly not the fun kind.

That looks about right though it does hurt a little that the pic make him look like he just got his photo taken for his driver's license and got stuck with a bad photo face. Looks like he looking somewhere other than the camera, forgets to smile. All the classic bad photo mistakes. Plus he isn't classic sexy. I think people expect Jesus to be kind of sexy. Not actually a Hercules or anything but not someone who looks like your average Trek fan as well.:)

Sometimes you got to let go of expectations.

Striking, wouldn't you say?
I would not say, no.

I think there's a real danger we're derailing this to be honest.

That's true unless the show is going to run with the idea of following up on one of those early "TOS;The Motion Picture" idea's of seeing Jesus who is basically a broken down clone who Kirk ends up fighting in hand to hand combat. I guess if you replace Burnham with Kirk you get the same idea and the show did say this season is going to be about faith vs science. Maybe they meant that being depicted as a kick-ass fight!:)

It’s rather funny how so many think their prejudices and biases will continue to exist in the future.
TOS showed a 99% human crew where most of the bridge crew at least dealt with their prejudices until a situation occured, e.g IMO McCoy is border line speciest, Lt. Styles (?) showed his true self when the Romulans were discovered, and was very rude and disrepectful to Spock. Prejudices and biases still exist in Star Trek future, its redirected to other species.

Is it me, or does every recreation of ancient people (usually based on sticking clay on a skull...though not here obviously) end up with a relatively big nose and crossed eyes? I mean seriously...if you gave them a 3D print of a living skull, or vague markers, of a living person, you would still end up with a variation on captain big nose here. I am starting to wonder if humans simply didn’t have much feature variation until someone discovered sculpture and painting...and even then...I mean I know it’s cartilage, but surely some artistic flair wouldn’t go amiss.

Which of course serves the double purpose of hoping for and seeing a better world, whilst also still being able to talk about those issues as they exist today. He may have been a bit...questionable...but Gene sure planned something well at least.

But not at other humans, something that a lot of fans need to figure out.
