It seems there is a reason for the visual reboot and the producers aren't being honest about it.

Exactly. I don't remember anyone being up in arms about TOS Remastered. Because it was done with a degree of respect to the source material that seems to be lacking this time around.

I really fucking hate TOS remastered.
For the most parts it's fine - but EVERY single starship scene is a horrible fucking mess. The CGI looks amazingly cartoonish bad, and the whole direction (camera moves, sweeps) of the ships clashes hard with TOS more stationary camera work.

It's a fucking mess. The somewhat corny model work is a big part of TOS, if they wanted to re-do that, they should have either used the original filmed material like TNG remastered (although the final result wouldn't have had the same quality), or stick a lot closer to the original effects.

EdenFX (who did he fx for ENT) was actually in the running as well, and their version would have fitted much better:

(take especially a look at the downloadable video)

But alas, EdenFX would have made top of the line efects. And CBS wanted to play cheap and let their in-house fx team have a shot at it (and utterly fail at it).

The worst part is that the remastered version now is the only version that will get shown on television re-runs.

I LOVE the work they did for TNG. That was truly special and amazing. But the remastering of TOS I hold in the same regard as George Lucas' tinkering with the original Star Wars movies. Don't try to fix what isn't broken!

This whole idea that they are setting out to "fool the fans" into watching a reboot by telling them it's in the Prime is frankly kind of funny. I have this image of Evil Studio Heads rubbing their hands together and doing the Dr. Evil Laugh.

"We'll get them, and then they'll be trapped! HA! HA! HA!"

Some TOS-Remastered effects look just fine or are downright beautiful and an improvement over the original 1960s opticals, though I still have a lot of affection for the original special effects. Others not so much. And others just didn't go far enough ("The Ultimate Computer" barely gave us any dynamic glory shots of the war games and the four Connies engaging the Enterprise in battle, just quick cuts and shots where the starships were seen mostly at a distance).

It was a business decision, and the suggested selling of a product to the most amount of buyers with a classic bait-and-switch. One can judge for oneself whether that constitutes being evil.

There is no malice involved. They just really don't care. Not at all.
"Get this childish sci-fi stuff out there, these nerds are paying dollars for it! But it's a product on my resumé, so don't make it look like that stupid Star Trek shit!"

Something tells me it is somewhere between those extremes of malice and apathy.

Those are good! Too bad they didn't go with EdenFX.

The same view I have. I don't mind TOS-R in a pinch or to see what they did out of curiosity but regular TOS is still my go-to choice.

While they didn't do this on purpose. the whole point of "corporate canon" is just a marketing gimmick to make fans watch something (Which is why I will always argue canon is a fan concept, not a corporate one).

If you want the complete Star Trek story, you will have to watch Discovery because it's prime canon, if the execs said "yeah it's just a reboot doing it's own thing" they know that this could lead to not as many Trek fans watching it or merchandise being purchased. The rumour is as well that Kelvin Merchandise sold like crap compared to Trek "prime" merchandise so they learned a lesson from that as well.

This trend of "Reboot Sequels/Prequels" across pop culture at the moment largely because they've probably focus tested the limits of just straight up reboots.

I don't think there is any malice behind it, just research and marketing.

Haha I would not be surprised if these exact words came out of Moonves mouth to be honest.

I've always preferred good, old-fashioned models to CGI - they always look more "real" to me - but I will grant that the best part of TOS-R, for me, was what they did with planets. They actually looked like planets, with continents and oceans and weather, instead of monochrome beach balls. I'm not a big fan of the current look of outer space effects shots, where the ship is moving, the "camera" is moving, and all you see is a blur. (Admittedly, the shot in DSC where the "camera" panned over the rotating saucer and between the two sections, immediately prior to a spore jump, was cool and wouldn't have been doable with a model. Unless you miniaturized your camera or your model was at 1:1 scale, and living where the show is shot, I think I'd notice if they'd built a 1:1 model down on the waterfront where the studio is located.)

Couldn't possibly be that people make what they genuinely think is the best creative/aesthetic choice for the show they're making now, and genuinely view it as prime timeline.

The guys writing it? Most likely. All the prop and fx guys? Sure as hell!
Mid-level managament? I'm pretty sure they couldn't give a damn. Sci-fi especially seems to be extremely unpopular by the guys making business decisions at CBS.

Those new, colorfull Star Trek-like uniforms in the trailer for season 2, that every fan reaction to was positive? They weren't created for S2. They were made for S1. Until some producers nixed them, and instead mandated those horrible blue pyjamas with metallic accents on the actors side bellies. I have the feeling a LOT of bad decisions on DIS weren't exaclty creative choices, but corporate mandates ("Make it dark! people love dark sci-fi! Make it gritty! This is rated R, we need more violence! BSG was popular, and it was dark! Make it more like that!"). And that show is bursting with bad decisions.

That would still be unreliable without a first party source.

I do recall some people who toured the production before airing saying they saw colourful uniforms.

But those could have been prototypes, and the uniforms we see in the trailer are brand new.
