Why can't Trek have a cinematic universe again?

You could always do a "cinematic universe" in a more unique way, rather than focus on multiples ships and crews at one time, why not focus on one ship through it's service. That way you could have several crews carrying on the ship's story as it goes through a time of great change, even with an underlying plot where each crew deals with elements of what's going on.

For example, the Miranda-Class U.S.S. Diligent is commissioned in 2274 and heads out on her maiden voyage, a long-range survey mission. Jump forward a decade when the Klingons are rattling sabres in response to Project Genesis and a standoff along the border. Then to the signing of the Khitomer Accords when they find themselves assigned to a good will mission to support the Klingon Homeworld following the destruction of Praxis. Then into the early 2300s, dealing with tensions between the three major powers. Then to 2311 and the Tomed Incident. The 2330s and rising tensions with the Cardassians and Tzenkethi. Ending in 2344 with the ship about to be decommissioned after 70 years of service, though not before being the second ship to reach Narendra III after the battle claimed the E-C. You could then have a second Diligent being commissioned soon after, a newer vessel such as a Cheyenne- or Springfield-Class, taking up the mantle and carrying on the story over the next 30-40 years.

I've had this idea before as well. PLus the idea of following one character at different postings during his or her career. A Anthlogy series would be great and that was what "Discovery" was suppose to be the start of but that didn't happen but it's still a good idea to go back to. Imaging a Trek version of "American Horror Story" or "Black Mirror." It would be awesome IMO.

With the two new films announced, what a bout a two-part cinematic universe bringing back characters and ships from TNG, DS9 and VOY, get some proper Trek back on our screens!

They'd do best to stick with the characters and actors, to the extent possible, that have been part of making the last three Trek movies by far the most successful in the history of the franchise.

That's not a very Star Trek mentality, lol. It's about time we moved past the obsession with financial gain and instead focus on making something good, that will have every die hard fan flock to the cinema to see their favourite characters played by their respective actors saving the galaxy once again.

You're free to do so, of course. CBS and Paramount are businesses, and the only reason they will invest the sums of money necessary to produce feature films and TV series is in the reasonable expectation of good financial returns.

Well it took the likes of QT to even be considered as an alternate script to their shlock. Somehow those two stories don't thrill me. I mean you know they can't outsource the script and/or story because that's money that they don't get and really that's all Trek means to them.

There are not enough "die-hard" Star Trek fans to make that kind of fanwanky movie at all solvent at the box-office. At the end of the day, studios are financial organizations, concerned about their bottom line. "Good" don't mean shit to the bean counters, "marketable" and "profitable" do.

We can. A business cannot at this point in time, unless filmmaking became a whole lot cheaper than I thought it was.

Maybe not at the movies but even their with the right budget you might make some money. Netflix or I guess it would be CBS All Access though could benefit from it.

I'm curious, is anyone here a Marvel fan? And if so, do you watch ALL the MCU content on Netflix and elsewhere? Because I've tried, and a lot of it's... not so good. For every Jessica Jones or Agents of SHIELD there seem to be two Iron Fists.

I'd hate to see Trek become so bland and skippable as a lot of MCU TV output.

On Netflix, yes, and while IF was clearly the weakest link, I found it perfectly enjoyable. Elsewhere, I managed to see all of Agent Carter and AoS up to last season (Love AoS, thought Carter was fun but didn't reach its potential) but Marvel's diversification push is ending my ability to actually catch everything. Inhumans was nowhere that I had access to (and judging by the trailers I'm inclined to believe everyone's verdict that it wasn't worth watching anyway). Runaways is something I really want to see but I have no idea when I'll be able to. I'd happily check out Cloak and Dagger, as well, but no idea how at the moment. Ditto for the New Warriors (that's still happening, right?) Overall, I'd still say the MCU is the most consistent franchise in history, even on tv, though right now that's largely the result of Netflix having created the vast majority of marvel tv and done, for the most part, an excellent job of it.

just seen Infinity War and its got me thinking about how something as big/eventful as that could've been for Trek in the late 90s/early 00s with something like that Bring Back Kirk trailer as a movie instead of Nemesis (or had Nemesis been a FC sized hit then what the rumours about a potential Nemesis sequel would be) ..

wonder if that's what QT is secretly plotting and planning out now?

I haven’t seen infinity war yet, but they’ve been paving the way and building the tension and anticipation for a decade. If Trek wants a piece of that cake it needs to do its homework too or it’s just gonna flop.

Firm believer in building up from a modest start and getting better with each instalment. I may have said this before.
