The Defiant vs. The Discovery in a Battle

That's not a stalemate, that's running away, a.k.a. forfeiting the battle. Makes a difference if you're actually fighting over something.
It's a strategic escape though. Looks like a stalemate to me. It's like when Quinn kept running away from Q in "Death Wish":

Q: [on viewscreen] You can't hide from me, Q.
QUINN: And you can't take me by force. I'll stalemate you for eternity, if I have to.

stalemate: any position or situation in which no action can be taken or progress made; deadlock:

You're all crazy!

Discovery would wreck the Defiant before they even knew it was there.

BOOM! Adios, suckers!

Defiant would hit it with five or six quantum torpedoes while it was doing its spastic spore convulsions. :p

But but, Starfleet doesn't build combat ships.

The Defiant is a pure science/diplomacy vessel, Just like all Starfleet vessels.
Suure...

Besides, I'm pretty sure that any 24th century starship that's bigger than a runabout would kick Discovery's arse with contemptuous ease. It's like pitting a WWI ship against a modern design.

I'm not convinced it would be quite as big of a technological leap as 1918 to 2018. We'll never see advancements that quickly ever again.

I can't even imagine what it would've been like for someone who was born in the 1890s and died in the 1960s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity <-- if we ever get one of those going it will

Hopefully the new Super Intelligence will be able to figure how to create a new Ecological Revolution for Earth, which I believe to be the next revolution after the Computer Revolution. A revolution that will be born out of necessity because otherwise, we'll enter into a new period of severe material scarcity and decline.

I figured it out: Lower birth rates.

You take the resources, technology and institutions needed to support 10 billion people, and use them to support far fewer people.

And it was happening naturally in developed countries until the big migration boom of the last two decades.

I guess I'm part of the solution. I'm 38 and I don't have kids.

Nah, if population growth were a moving car, your not having kids would be a fly hitting the windscreen.

And as I said, western governments are just using migration to keep up the growth.

The Midwest of the United States is a vast area that could be populated. Construction jobs, converting soil for agriculture, infrastructure, not as much worry about overcrowding...

But, anyway: Defiant for the win! Much as I like Discovery.

Well sure, if we abandoned capitalism I'm sure we could do all manner of progressive things with land. But the trend seems to be that everything gets concentrated in the larger cities. Smaller towns close to big cities become dormitory towns, and ones that are too far away become deprived and depopulated.

If your purpose is to not get caught, successfully running away is a victory.

In a typical military scenario, the side the runs is giving the objective to the other side.

The Borg are attacking Earth. The Enterprise-D...RUNS AWAY! That's not a "stalemate," it's Game Over for Earth.

Discovery running away isn't a stalemate though, as they can still come back, ie: make a move. Running is a choice, not a stalemate.

It's not a stalemate in any case. If Disco simply runs from the battle, it's a defeat (most battles end with one side withdrawing rather than being annihilated). If Disco runs with the intention of re-engaging, the battle hasn't ended yet.

Depends on the objective. If it's simply to get passed that particular point in space, by forcing Discovery out of position, the Defiant wins. It doesn't matter if Discovery returns later.

Defiant's obtained the objective, gotten pass and moved on.
