Toe to toe, Defiant wins without breaking a sweat. Superior technology 100 years advanced and being a ship designed specifically for combat are too overwhelming variables in this scenario.

True, but the objective would never just be to get past a small point in space. Defiant would have to be trying to either hold that position for a particular duration, or pass through it in order to reach a destination. In either case, Discovery would have time to return and mount a counter-attack, resuming the battle.

If the objective is to bomb a planet, Defiant only needs to force Discovery away long enough to do so.

If we're going to start looking at it in terms of accomplishing an objective, then it obviously may depend on what the objective actually is.

    This is straight-up ship-to-ship combat.

Then Defiant in a heartbeat unless Discovery comes up with some pretty novel hit-and-run tactics.

I just had a thought. The Discovery wouldn't be able to take out the Defiant but if Star Trek: Generations is anything to go by, it could take out the Enterprise-D. They just need the right shield modulation frequency. :p

Well then it's easy. In a straight firefight, Defiant kills anything from the 23rd century. The spore drive is useful tactically, but is of little use when you're trying to blow up another ship, just like the Defiant's cloaking device.

    You call that spinning?

My grandma spins better than that.

    That's some weak sauce.

Well according to ST09 having a ship from a hundred years later (even if it's just a mining ship) means you can take on a whole fleet and win in no time and with no noticeable damage. So the Defiant hands down.

I call that elegance and beauty given form, with big pulse-phaser cannons that would tear through the weak-hulled Discovery in seconds. Would love to see how well it spun when it ludicrous saucer was in shreds.

The Defiant is ugly as hell.

This is elegance and beauty. And spinning.

And upon returning, exactly how would the Discovery find the Defiant?

If you're talking about the cloaking device, that would defeat the object of knocking Discovery out of position in the first place. Otherwise, sensors.

I would assume the the Defiant's easy crusing speed would be far beyond Discovery maximum emergency speed.

After running away and then returning, would Discovery be able to detect the Defiant.

But that's the point of the thread isn't it? Discovery's only potential combat advantage over a ship that's 110 years its junior would be that it can move virtually anywhere with only a few seconds of preparation time.

If the objective was to simply get past Discovery, Defiant's speed and stealth advantage would eliminate any need to engage or force Discovery to move in the first place. Even without the cloak, she could simply zip by at warp unobstructed.

I figure Defiant's 100 year advanced computer could hack right in to Discovery and shut down the spore drive in a few seconds, so Defiant wins.

A floating leaf would likely fuck the Enterprise D's warp core enough to force Geordi to roll under the emergency barrier as it drops.

Might there be a coolant leak in this equation?
