It was an elected monarchy, not something she inherited.

That makes sense and answers a lot - thanks! :) (I need to try to get back to quoted responses more often... time and tide melts the snowman, of course...)

The reason that I don't like (hate is too strong a word) the prequel trilogy is that there are very few surprises. Pretty much everything that happened in the prequel trilogy can be summed up in the conversation that Obi Wan has with Luke in ROTJ. Just a few lines of exposition expanded into three movies. The only real surprise I had was that the Clone Wars were Clone vs. Droid. I thought that they'd be clone versus clone.

What the prequel trilogy needed to do was to subvert the original trilogy. The Jedi were seen through rose tinted glasses by Obi Wan and Yoda. What would have been shocking and interesting if they were the villains of the prequels. Not necessarily through conscious intent, but through complacency, and maybe even petty corruption. They are already shown as isolated and aloof, less willing to get involved except in high level poltical affairs. Take that one step further and make them even more political. more focused on maintaining their own position. Introduce Palpatine as the hero of the prequels, a talented Force user who initially wants the Jedi to care about the little people once more, but in looking for the strength to oppose Jedi venality, he finds Sith teaching which leads him down the dark path.

The prequel's saving grace is that they're so dissimilar from the original trilogy I don't even think of them happening in the same universe or to the same characters.

This is very true. I walked out of TPM, even at 15ish, feeling that way.

I think a lot of people were surprised, and disappointed, that the Jedi forbade marriages (certainly goes against Obi-Wan's claim that he knew Anakin wanted his son to have his lightsaber and become a Jedi).

It's always seemed pretty obvious Lucas made up that rule solely to give Anakin and Padme some conflict without really thinking about it. :/

Obi-Wan also said that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered Anakin Skywalker.

Obi-Wan was a liar. Then again, telling Luke he's the son of the most vile and hated man in the galaxy, probably would not have been for the best.

Vader wasn't supposed to be his father when ANH was written, so I think this is forgivable. It also kinda helps the story develop for Luke to think Vader killed his father.

My biggest struggle is imply how much of a liar Obi-Wan really became after watching the PT. The Jedi go from the "guardians of peace and justice" to political pawns who manipulate their own to further their power.

"Everyone thinks they're righteous." --J. Whedon

He was the hero of his own story, I'm pretty sure he wasn't going to say the organization he pledged his life to were ineffectual puppets.

Yes, well, wasn't expecting the exact opposite of what Obi-Wan said. Also, really takes the thunder out of Luke becoming a Jedi because the Jedi were rather ineffectual.

Luke in TLJ was just an outgrowth of his experience in learning bout the Order in the PT.

Jedi weren't all bad. They were just outflanked and didn't have the allies to support them in protecting the galaxy. The Republic senate was a lot worse and the Jedi had to work in that corrupt bureaucracy. A positive thing you can say about the Jedi is they never considered staging a coup to take power and insert their will. When they contemplated removing Palpatine from office, it was their intention to give that power back to the senate. Now, sure. All tyrants make that promise, but the Jedi weren't that dishonest and devious. If they had been, they would've seen the purge coming.

I do wonder is the Jedi were an genuine arm of the Republic and not self-appointed "guardians of peace and justice" in the galaxy.

I got that immediately after starting IV from my first time trying to watch the prequels. Lucas tried so hard to revise and 'fix' the originals to match up with the prequels and from the first 30 minutes, any sane person would say "This is not remotely the same universe."

Everything feels different. Probably the poorest example of continuity between films in the same franchise I have literally ever seen.

Yup. Thing is, I read a whole bunch of the expanded universe novels as a kid, and every single one of them felt like it took place within the same universe with the same characters.
