Viacom/CBS possibly to re-merge

i'm not sure that's possible.

Sadly, yeah. They operate on 'Force Awakens' -logic and -physics. Like, I'm not weighing the entirety of continuity issues of the prime timeline vs. the entirety of continuity issues of the Kelvin timeline (although even that would be somewhat close), but by continuity- and logic- issues per movie/episode, and they are pretty uncatchable in the lead.

No. He won’t. I am reluctant to predict too much about any film project at such an early stage, but I’d be comfortable betting a month’s salary a Tarantino Trek film, if it happens at all, will be a Kirk, Spock and company film—or it won’t happen.

Or it could be a Kelvin based TNG film. I suppose we'll only find out in the near future.

yeah my takeaway is the opposite: canon is an albatross around the neck of this series and the kelvin timeline is an unappreciated opportunity to do something different (no matter how much you may like or dislike abrams' approach).

You mean like Wrath of Khan? Again.

Oooh, what they did with all that freedom once the shackles of canon were unfastened.

Put me in a camp that favors:

1) Ending the Kelvinverse in the next flick
2) Moving Trek into the future again (excellent post on that last page).
3) Allowing Disco to continue on to fill in some blanks between Pike and Kirk.

Is there any canonical reason why the could not use the Guardian in some way? We could get older Picard (Prime), older Kirk (Kelvin), hell, even Data or some others (including DS9 folk) if they time jump to fix things.

Yes, there is some serious fan wank there. And a lot of jumping around time periods. It could suck. Or it could be All Good Things all over again. What Generations should have been.

QT said he was a big Yesterday's Enterprise fan.

They won’t use the Guardian because Harland Ellison would try to sue. He tried a few years back because he heard a rumor that they were going to use it, I think he has partial rights to it or thinks he does.

If it weren't for the current movies this franchise would be worthless right now.

First - Love Discovery and looking forward to next season

But - would love to see a show post-TNG. While the TNG actors can still take part a bit. Would love to see Patrick Stewart (with his wife Beverly) send off the new ship. And then have an episode where they rendezvous with the Titan (some Riker/Troy cameo). Even have La Forge come fix a ship problem (with the new DATA).

Thinking of it - with a future program - couldn't you re-cast Data. Much like a Trill say they have now been able to reverse engineer the tech and now Data can live on forever with various bodies.

Seems you could do some fan service giving some TNG character some continuation.

I'm with you, but I feel like this is a minority opinion (at least around here) and if there's any truth to the supposed legal issue behind the change to the Enterprise, it could complicate things.

I’d like to see a post tng show but not a ton of cameos by the old cast. Throw it 100 years in the future have a McCoy type moment in the pilot and let it do its own thing.

However it would still have its share of continuity issues.

Old Trek is dead. CBS would certainly consider more spinoff's set in the Discovery universe, and I'm sure that a film spinoff of the current Kelvinverse franchise is inevitable.

I don't think there is any reason to have Kelvinverse in TV series. The casual star trek fan who sees a Kelvinverse movie won't nitpick a later series for messing up some head canon of theirs from the Kelvinverse movies.

While a true star trek fan will thow a fit if the tv show is Kelvinverse.

I think the biggest issue with the Kelvinverse is they never should have destroyed Vulcan. Whoever came up with that story idea totally messed up everything. I mean they could retcon a bunch of stuff to make the Kelvinverse flow back into prime .... but they destroyed Vulcan. The only way to bring the two branches back together would be to destroy Vulcan in the prime universe (which would be stupid too because we have been there done that).

I mean the whole idea in a lot of time travel scifi is that you can change the timeline a little but it will correct itself and not make any lasting changes. But then you go and have one of the most important races in the trek narrative wiped off the map. You can't recover the timeline from that.

It was just a bad idea creating such a permanent branch from the two universes that never needed to be done.

Now as for destroying Romulus - thats another matter since its at the end of our current cannon timeline. There could be some good narrative with some Romulans becoming part of federation and then some rogue terrorist Romulans trying to rebuild the empire. Romulans are much more interesting then Vulcans with the intellect and emotion both!
