Replicator rations and holodeck time...

Rewatching Voyager. This question just struck me.

The crew earned replicator rations which they spent on replicated goods - food or equipment. At the same time the crew was limited on their holodeck time and had an allowance of so many hours...

But, how did this work when engaged in group holodeck activities like Sandrines, the beach resort, or Fair Haven? Did that come out of just one person's holodeck time? Did everyone contribute minutes?

And how did this affect replicator rations? When a crewman went to Sandrines and ate a meal, did it come out of his replicator rations?

I don't know if they officially discussed this (writing team) so my guesses are : over looked, pitch in if you want to join, or there was a ration separate for group participation.

The whole holodeck thing just makes no sense. Even letting aside the oddity of a separate, completely incompatible energy source for the holodeck (that they just mention once and then never bring it up again) it still makes you wonder why everyone didn't eat their meals there instead of the mess.

^ The mess hall could've then become the new cargo bay 2 once hydroponics was established (which then disappeared in favour of Borg alcoves).

During Fair Haven When they drop anchor to "ride out the storm" that VOY cannot outrun she leaves the program running as a distraction.... maybe this came out of Janeway's holodeck time? Or maybe there was a universal bank of minutes that could be used during situations like that.

Yeah for a ship that had to ration alot of stuff they still looked like they were living somewhat luxuriously, (I wish they had some more episodes that contained the struggle of looking for materials or power rationing or something.) but I am assuming when you use someone elses program you dont use any of your own holodeck time, and if you just request that a group thing is not to be taken out of your time for their benefit or something then you dont lose as much time or soemthing.

I always guessed that a "public" program did not come out of your own time. it was just running in one holodeck and you could go in if you wanted to.

It is their main leisure activity. Without any disctraction they would have gone mad. On a 70 year journey full of danger they needed the holodecks to maintain sanity.

As we've seen in TNG and DS9 the holodecks are their main sources of leisure activity. We have seen them occasionally reading a book.

I remember Janeway and Chakotay reading. For the life of me I can't remember anyone else. Tom had his old TV set.

Can i say that the Leonardo Da Vinci's holoprogram was my favourite, especially the studio/workshop. It was brilliantly made.

And John Rhys-Davies was an excellent choice to perform Da Vinci.

It is only because the show says it is. Even the Enterprise, with it's non-rationed holodeck use still had the crew going to or performing in plays and music recitals. They played sports and games, socialized in Ten Forward...it's not hard to pass the time without using holograms.
