Replicator rations and holodeck time...

It is only because the show says it is. Even the Enterprise, with it's non-rationed holodeck use still had the crew going to or performing in plays and music recitals. They played sports and games, socialized in Ten Forward...it's not hard to pass the time without using holograms.
They also had like a thousand people on board so they had musicians and actors and all that. Voyager had 150ish people. Perhaps not many of them wanted to perform or watch a performance

In Coda they mention putting on performances like the reading of Vulcan poetry, Harry playing the clarinet, and Janeway doing the dying swan. They have parties in the mess hall. They had a science fair in Child's Play. Noami and Icheb were putting a puzzle together in Shattered.

They're examples, I'm not saying Voyager had to do exactly the same thing.

It doesn't matter anyway, the rationing of everything never really played a part...they'd have been better off not even bringing it up in the first place. Nothing major would have changed.

During Fair Haven When they drop anchor to "ride out the storm" that VOY cannot outrun she leaves the program running as a distraction....
I just looked at the transcript of that ep and saw this:

JANEWAY: Then transfer all secondary power sources. Transporters, replicators, holodecks.

So they did eventually figure out how to transfer power from the holodeck after all. :)

I think a possible explanation why people didn't just eat in the holodeck is that once you leave the holodeck, the holomaterial disappears, or the used bits in your body disappear.

Food replicators, if memory serves me from TNG and DS9 tech manuals and other dialogue throughout the franchise, works on a slightly different principle in that it is creating actual matter from energy, rather than just a projection.

Holodecks use replicator tech too. Things like food, snow, water, books, etc get replicated when interacted with. As Data says in Encounter at Farpoint, much of it (the simulation) is real.

Lol that's one way to diet.

Tosk- however nothing can leave the holodeck, at least not that I can remember, without a mobile emitter. It's made of holomatter, real within the confines of the holodeck.

Exactly. It is solid within a holodeck, or wherever there are projectors. What comes out of a replicator is built from the ground up.

I think of it like this... what the holodeck shows is an email, and what is replicated is what comes out of a printer.

I suppose you could teleport real matter into the holodeck. There was an episode where Tom forgot the anniversary of his first date with B'Elanna. He had Neelix replicate flowers and a bottle of wine. He then told Neelix to send the meal. Maybe it's replicated in the mess hall and then teleported to the holodeck.

The way I thought is that neelix had it "sent" to the holodeck. When they ran the program the food would be replicated so it would be real.

I always guessed that a "public" program did not come out of your own time. it was just running in one holodeck and you could go in if you wanted to.
^^ This...
The holodeck time for Sandrine's and Fair Haven, at least at some point, were likely just considered as almost essential for the wellbeing of the crew. I know someone also already mentioned the fact that Janeway specifically stated in one of the episodes that Fair Haven would be left on all the time for this reason. Also, Sandrine's, as I recall had a similar arrangement.
One could make the argument that all items on the ship requiring power were budgeted, and that budget also may have included the replicator rations and holodeck time. This budget could have also included the public use holodeck time as well, over and in addition to the personal holodeck time, and may have been considered as a public utility such as lighting or life support. Of course, none of that to my knowledge, was mentioned canonically.

I kind of like that explanation. There are also times when it's like a combination. Example the luau party I think. Can't remember but I'm sure sometimes Neelix caters for a holodeck event, and I'm guessing that food would have more substance.

No, we've seen several things leave the holodeck (Snow, water, pieces of paper). Early TNG eps confuse the matter though (no doubt the "science" of the holodeck was in flux), but they are the outliers IMO.

This must be on the other shows then because I don't remember any of this on Voyager. I've only watched Next Gen once. Not a fan. Must have forgotten these scenes.

The snowball that hit Picard outside the holodeck was formed inside the holodeck in Angel One.

So, how would one explain the fact that the EMH ate during a holodeck scene in Heroes & Demons, in relation to the events in Body & Soul almost 6 years later when (I think) the Doc claims he cannot eat.

The holodeck knows that there is no point creating real food for a holographic person. The better question is, why did the Doctor say that the food was quite good and then later claim that he had never experienced the pleasure of eating?

Most certainly... and that's actually the question I was attempting to ask at 5:30am before drinking any coffee. :bolian:
