We could've had the First Asian Female Captain, but no....

Speaking of Georgiou I really hope she becomes a regular next season and they don't make her a cartoon baddie like they did with Lorca, even if she is working with Section 31. .Here is prime example of how get a strong female character who can break new ground. If you can make a murdering,Kelpian eating and who knows what other terrible things she has done become a character on the show that is more than just being a villian it would be a good thing. Granted we are still talking about a Trek show thus a action adventure type of show so that doesn't fully negate what Samuel Jackson said but it will still be a good thing to see on tv. She could be the shows version of Kara Thrace. Strong willed women, but also a asshole, but who is brave in the face of danger but also someone who mind fucks the men who she happens to be dating. Has typical human venerability who has a taste for good music but makes fun of people sometimes in that not so nice kind of way. A trully well rounded strong female character.

I wouldn’t call a cartoonish villain a well rounded strong female character. I definitely wouldn’t compare her to Starbuck.

Not yet I would agree. I think the potential is their though for a really great character. Being removed from a cartoon universe like the mirror universe will only help improve the character. Look at Lorca. He went from being a captain with unknown motives and hard ass personality not common in starfleet yet also dealing with the trauma of loosing his crew from his first ship to basically being a campy baddie who would fit well as a Flash Gordan villain.

That ship has sailed. Georgiou and the actress portraying her - not good.

I think she was a little stiff as the captain but not that bad. I thought she was terrific as the evil version. Playing evil must always be kind of fun for actors because it lets them loosen up. Now they just got to give her more depth while still maintaining her brutal, nasty side while also letting us see her humanity from time to time to show that she is human being with the ability to also be able to do good things as well.

Obviously a hack:
In 1999, she was a member of the jury at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival.[29]

On 19 April 2001, Yeoh was awarded the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP), which carries the title Dato' by Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak, her home state, in recognition of the fame she brought to the state.[30]

On 25 November 2002, she was honoured as The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) (Cultural Achievement) by JCI (Junior Chamber International).[31]

On 23 April 2007, French President Jacques Chirac awarded Yeoh as Knight of the Legion of Honour (Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur). The decoration was presented to her in a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on 3 October 2007.[32] She was promoted to Officer of the same French Order (Officier de la Légion d'honneur) by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on 14 March 2012. The decoration was presented to her at a ceremony held at the president's official residence, the Elysee Palace on that day.[33]

In 2011, she received a special award for her contribution to Malaysian cinema at Malaysian Film Festival (FFM 24).

On 22 May 2012, she was awarded the Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Perak (SPMP) which carries the title Datuk Seri' during the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah's birthday.[34]

Michelle Yeoh received the Excellence in Asian Cinema award during the seventh annual Asian Film Awards on March 2013 in Hong Kong.

On 1 June 2013, she was awarded the Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) which carries the title Tan Sri during the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.[35]

On 30 November 2013, she presided as the Chief Guest at the International Film Festival of India.[36]

As in she is arguably the biggest existing star ever to join star trek as a main cast member, not to mention having acting credentials on a par with Patrick Stewart?

i think captain georgiou is the most successful character in the series so far.

it's not an easy task to get the audience to mourn the death of a character they are just being introduced to, but that's exactly what i did the entire season. the long shadow she casts is due almost entirely to yeoh's performance in the first two episodes. it's the reason we're even discussing her still.

Yep. Captain Georgiou was really strong and memorable, I instantly liked her. I just didn't care for the evil version, seemed to tarnish the memory of the real Georgiou. But I'm sure that is somehow an allegory about the whole series, really.

Damn, if Yeoh was ever introduced with all of her titles, she'd make Empreror Georgiou's full name and titles sound about as regal and imperious as "Sick Rick". :)

Does anyone know if Georgiou is going to be a regular or at least in more episodes than she was on season 1? I want her to be a power player in any major Section 31 arc and not just someone who comes in and does a couple of episodes and then goes away.

Jason

I'm not sure if hamming it up to be mirror Georgiou needs to be caricaturised even more with this Section 31 nonsense. Can't we just have normal Starfleet? Like Cornwell or a toned down Georgiou??

We will have normal Starfleet and I expect to see more of Cornwell. In fact I see her actually facing some pressure since she basically approved Mirror Georgiou being made "captain" of the Discovery for that last mission. If Mirror Georgiou starts causing problems she will be a easy person to blame. In that regard I think we will see more of the black Vulcan Admiral on the show and at least one another Admiral character as well. Be nice to see the Federation President as well to remind people that Starfleet doesn't run the Federation though I think even the shows writers over the years don't even seem to notice that Starfleet seems to have to much power at times.

Jason

I tend to agree. I sometimes have to remind myself not to use the Federation and Starfleet as interchangeable words.

With Georgiou knowing the next 10 years of prime history from the Defiant, she could use that knowledge to make herself quite powerful.
I would use her in novel form and have her go up against Kirk in a season 4 or 5 story.

I never thought about this. When you talk about this show being a prime universe show or not you have the Georgiou equation to deal with. It's possible that the show is in a alternate timeline created by Georgiou being brought into it with future knowledge which in turn creates a new future which then alters it's own past since all time travel stuff in the future to past locations will also be altered thus meaning this timeline was changed years ago though the cause of that change wouldn't happen until the future which would be the arrival of Georgiou into it. Georgiou might be this show's very own Admiral Spock.

For what it's worth TOS had more than its share of sinister and criminally-minded Starfleet officers who went above and beyond what Section 31 would be mandated to do. For whatever mischief and outright war crimes they commit, they get away with it under cover of Starfleet regulations and Federation law. They're bastards, but they're legally-sanctioned bastards who are routinely ignored or apologized away.

Ron Tracey. Garth after his accident and onset of insanity. Even Matt Decker's dangerous and irrational behavior after losing his ship and crew. They pulled their shit while wearing a service uniform and in plain sight of everybody else. TOS isn't nearly as "pure" as some of us might like to think when comparing it to the covert activity seen in DSC and some of the other series and films.

When people complain about Section 31 they completely forget about the Maquis which you could be argued was DS9's first big attempt to call out some flaws in the Roddenberry vision of Trek. Federation citizens, some who were ex-Starfleet basically becoming terrorist. Also the very fact that Starfleet had a Intelligence branch seems or marines also seem to be things that make Starfleet to be a little more grounded in reality than people give it credit for.
