Sorry, I'm late to the discussion and didn't read all the pages...

To me personally i am enjoying this show on the basis that is is NOT set in the prime universe. There are too many differences for my tastes. And im not talking just about the look of the ship. I get we have better technology now and there's a bigger budget and such. I don't like the technological differences such as the holographic displays and the holodecks in a pre-TOS ship

Well we already saw a window on the CG model, so that ship has sailed.
The physical model of the Enterprise has a window there too.

It must be something in the air because in the Kelvin Universe even Khan got younger and changed ethnicities.

23rd century plastic surgery and anti aging treatments are amazing

They changed their ethnicities too, apparently. That's a pretty impressive survival mechanism.
In universe explanation; ethnic cleansing or the planet bleached their skin and hair
Kirk's lording over Decker has always struck me as being out of character.
He was being a typical pain in the butt Starfleet Admiral, watch TOS.

TOS, on the other hand, is absolutely indispensable. It is the reason that Trek exists as a franchise, and the wellspring of a really disproportionate amount of what is good and interesting and entertaining and even inspiring about it.
Nonsense, its a fictional tv show, not The gospel according to Enterprise

I can pretty much guarantee you that if Gene Rodenberry had access to the kind of resources the producers of Discovery currently have, he would not have made the same design choices.
You can speak to the dead? (Anyway cough cough Star Trek TMP)

In short, Starfleet is one spastic and indecisive organization when it comes to how its members dress.

Because every species wanted a say in the design lol

The worst dressers in the Star Trek universe are definitely the Romulans. I 'I've never seen so impractical clothes as their uniforms, plus they must have awful tailors because their clothes don't fit.

It seems a lot of species have uniforms that don't look practical in any way.

It's true that TOS defined Star Trek. None of this fiction exists except as elaborations of that TV series.

What one makes of that is up to the individual, but it's just the truth.

So, I've been out of the "DSC: Prime or not" game for a while, but I have been reading this thread and just to be clear that I understand the "DSC is not prime" side correctly, (or at least some of the posters on that side, I'm sure everyone has their own specific reasons) the argument is that while DSC is said to be canon by CBS it is incompatible with the rest of Trek continuity due to stuff like the Klingon and general visual redesigns and technology and to a lesser extent also the lore and should therefore not be considered prime, is that correct?

Then you're intentionally deluding yourself, which isn't healthy, and should stop.
Saying stuff like that, really isn't helpful for our side of the argument. It's kinda insulting and can be really easily inverted, as @King Daniel Beyond showed.

If you want to play that game, I don't think getting this rude and bent out of shape over what fictional universe a TV show is set in is particularly healthy, whereas while I disagree with Sophie's assessment that DSC is not in the prime universe, there was nothing delusional or unhealthy about what she said or how she said it, and it certainly didn't deserve your disproportionate response. Knock it off.

My apoligies if this was already addressed, I did not read all 137 pages. For those who argue that it IS in the prime universe, how are you explaining the advanced technology such as the holographic displays and holodecks?

Retcons and the fluidic nature of storytelling, which is exactly how other seeming inconsistencies have been "explained away" in Trek for years.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. Their technology is way more advanced than a ship of that era was previously established to be. I get the visual difference and that doesn't bother me as much. We have better technology now to make shows.

It was argued that the holodeck in Discovery lacked features such as talking and interacting with the holograms in the same way it was done in the TNG era and that we've seen technology that's close to that in DSC in TAS, a decade later, where there was a "holodeck" on the Enterprise, although that one had no holograms at all. It was also brought up that shooting training with holo-simulations has been around since Enterprise, so I guess I and others saw the sim room in Discovery as an evolution of that. I'm honestly not sure if the "holodeck" in TOS was explicitely said to not be able to create holographic humanoids, if it just didn't in that episode or something else.

There is also this video from the YouTube channel EC Henry, who made a, IMO, good video on the topic:

And those on the other side of the fence say that this time they've pushed miles too far to be in any way a plausible prequel, and see Discovery as a Gotham or Smallville-like entity. A modern take on an established mythos, set 10 years before something like classic Trek but in it's own world where events, characters, visuals and technologies are different.

Real World: It's 2018, people's idea of what's "advanced" and "futuristic" has changed since 1965. Star Trek should be cutting edge not retrofuturistic.
In Universe: We did see holodecks in TAS, so I've no problem with them in DISCO.
