The entire season is now available at once. So anyone who wants to watch DSC for free can sign up for the free week and binge it all.

And everyone who was freaking out about the concept of CBSAA expiring old episodes can relax.

 

And how many people only want to pay for CBS content? Frankly Star Trek is the only thing event remotely interesting on this service, with its bad interface and very limited library, how is it supposed to compete against stronger streaming services? Putting all that stuff in one service, makes for a far more competitive service.

Apparently selling this show to Netflix worldwide certainly helped, but Star Trek alone can't save this service.

 

Discontinued yesterday. I got my subscription through the iTunes store, to which CBSAA redirected me and was able to cancel without any fanfare or desperation offers to continue at 50% off or anything. Just a single button click and a confirmation click and done. Easy peasy.

I am genuinely curious how their subscriber numbers are going to trend now that Trek is over and all eps are available elsewhere. I suspect we'll never see viewership statistics, since it's all in-house and not monitored by a third party like Nielsen ratings. Such data would be considered "company proprietary" and never see the light of day.

 

They had about 1.5 million subscribers in Oct/Nov. Have they released any more recent information?

Edit: Don't they have to report their numbers for the sake of their shareholders? Surely it can't be that hard to find them. I see subscription numbers for the other streaming services all the time.

 

February 2017, Subscribers: 2 million
October 2017, Subscribers: 4 million
February 2018, Subscribers: 2 million

I'm contemplating canceling my membership until the new season starts but I'm going to check out a few episodes of Colbert and give The Good Fight another shot, but if I wind up not watching much on CBSAA, then I'll take a break and come back for more Discovery.

I don't think viewership fluctuations this early in CBSAA's effective life will lead to its untimely demise. They definitely need to beef up their catalog to get people to stick around. But I imagine TPTB at CBS and their intrepid accountants are expecting peaks and valleys.

 

I like reruns. I'm torn. I probably will cancel at some point.

 

If season 1 of DSC comes out on blu-ray in the near future, that's even less incentive for me to keep CBSAA between the breaks unless they add another "can't miss" show to their stable.

 

What about "Twilight Zone - 4th Attempt"?

 

Actually yeah, Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot would get me to resubscribe, at least to check it out.

 

other reasons to keep subscribers year-round other than Season 2 will start before end of 2018.

"Over the top streaming service"? really? Just what does that mean exactly? Gotta love truth in marketing.

It's mediocre at best compared to other such competitors when it comes to interface design usability and general reliability. They need to do a LOT of work to get it to "good" level, IMO. The success of Discovery should no way reflect on CBSAA as a platform, which is sorely lacking and the only way to se the show (at least, initially).

 

OTT-Over the Top, is the term created to designate a pay tv subscription service (free internet outfits like Crackle and Tubi Tv also are labeled OTT) that does not come through the cable company's box, but from another device or box that sits atop your tv.
Cable based pay tv services like HBO, Showtime, and the cable industry itself prefer the separate designation to create the illusion that there is some substantive (usually negative or inferior) difference between them and internet originated pay services-there really isn't. Netflix, Amazon, et al, are simply pay tv channels without the channel part or timeslot scheduling. Everything else about them, is exactly the same.

 

Well, I finally did it. I deleted my CBSAA subscription. Will re-up when either DSC S2 or Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot comes out. I love DSC, and I've had no issues or complaints about the service, but hell, if you're not hungry why get a table, right?

 

Ah...thank you for the clarification. Makes sense.

 

2 years ago I mentioned it and here it is. Possible price hike after season 2 ?
