Joe Menosky Goes To THE ORVILLE...

Farscape One

I wasn't sure where to post this, since Joe Menosky has written for every spinoff except ENTERPRISE.

I read that Joe Menosky is now a Co-Executive Producer for season 2 of THE ORVILLE.

I am sad that he isn't with DISCOVERY, as his sole writing credit there, "Lethe", was one of the best of the season, and provided an excellent insight and explanation into something I wondered about for many years.

But I am THRILLED he is on THE ORVILLE! I love that show, and having him on board can only mean even more awesomeness!

Any thoughts on this?

I wonder sometimes what it would take to get CBS to sue over The Orville...

I mean, I like the show, but the degree to which The Orville recruits Trek veterans, past and present, seems as little brazen.

I was really surprised that Joe Menosky wrote such a strong character episode in "Lethe" when all of his other Star Trek stuff was just "Really weird stuff happens and the characters are secondary". I wonder how much of it was actually his.

I'm glad he's working. Orville seems to be more of a retread of 90s Star Treks with a few cosmetic changes, so I imagine he'll be a good fit there.

I agree that it is a tired thing, this competition between DISCOVERY and THE ORVILLE.

I love both shows for different reasons.

As an aside, I have always hated fandom's constant 'bickering wars' over which is better. STAR TREK vs. STAR WARS. DS9 vs. B5. Original BSG vs. new BSG. Marvel vs. D.C. It's all completely ridiculous, and gives fandom a bad name.

What happened to enjoying a series because YOU enjoy it? Or being a fan of multiple series, many of which 'conflict' with each other. I have always felt a true genre fan can enjoy ALL that it has to offer, not take one or the other.

I'm a Trekkie, and I love STAR WARS. DS9 is my favorite STAR TREK series, but I also love B5. I enjoy both versions of BSG for different reasons. I'm a Browncoat. An X-Phile. A Scaper. SLIDERS, seaQuest DSV, EUREKA, WAREHOUSE 13, HERCULES, XENA, SUPERNATURAL, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, MONSTERS, ANDROMEDA, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., DOCTOR WHO (classic and current), 7 DAYS, THE WALKING DEAD, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, EARTH FINAL CONFLICT. The list actually continues for quite some time.

I'm not saying people shouldn't debate some of the qualities of different shows and defending your favorites, but sometimes it just goes too far.

Can't we all just... watch along?

I have to disagree here. Joe's episodes do contain some weird things happening, but a lot of his episodes are character centered. "Clues, "Darmok", "THE THAW", "ALTER EGO", "THE GIFT", "THE VOYAGER CONSPIRACY", "MUSE" just to name a few. Those were really good character pieces. And one thing I love about him is how he incorporates mythology into his episodes, and mythology, at its heart, are about characters. Characters are the reason why myths have been told and retold for hundreds and thousands of years.

I get depressed when I see what's going on in the News and the World Today. So, I think back to the '90s, high school, put on a plaid shirt, grab a drink of Surge (or Crystal Pepsi), and put on The Orville. I have Orville-brand microwave popcorn too. It tastes just as great when I'm watching Season 11 of The X-Files.

You oughta know and I'm here to remind you.

In fairness, it probably died a Page 2 Death.

Yeah...but that's a prefect illustration of what a non-event "who gives a shite" piece of news this actually is.

BUTT TEH ORFILL VERSIS TEH DISKUVERY IZ SOOOO PHUN TO DISKUSS!!!1!1! :ack:

I know...I know...not the OP's intent. Just having a little fun.

Lethe was an awesome episode...no question.

Why would CBS sue just because of who Orville employs on its writing staff?

Yeah, it doesn't work that way.

Period, full stop.

The notion is just completely uninformed.

If someone wanted to prevent an ex-employee from working for a competitor, they'd have them sign a non-compete agreement. Sometimes those hold up, sometimes they don't. Even in the ridiculous event that a studio tried to have a writer sign a fifteen or twenty year non-compete...well, it wouldn't happen and no one would sign up for that.

What about Coke vs Pepsi?

Trek vets are obviously seeing the merit of Orville over other shows.

I don't think that is how it works. They are going where the work is at. We have no idea the reason Menosky departed Discovery, but I doubt he just quit it to go work on The Orville.

Regardless of what I think of Discovery, I think it is the surer bet to be around longer.

"Obviously?" What is so obvious about it?

Pretty much this. The dynamics within Hollywood are unusual than most markets, and the reasons for Menosky's changing jobs might simply be he needs money.
