Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Time for a little tour of Main Engineering, now that the main room is complete. I chose to depict it in it's season three configuration, more specifically its arrangement as seen in "Elaan of Troyius" (office alcove to port of the foyer, only one power unit). The lighting scheme is more just a general feel, as we saw the set lit in several different ways throughout the series.

That shot from inside the cathedral tubes is stunning.

And the fully realized ceiling really sells the location of the engine room at the top of the secondary hull.

Just fabulous all the way round.

You might have already discussed this issue, but I was curious about this image:

The wall is asymmetrical and the tubes behind them are off-center as well. What was your reasoning for this? Is it just a matter of once you fill in the blanks, that's what results, given the location of the right side wall, and the part of the ceiling we can see on the show?

If the tubes are supposed to be on their own...I guess. But they could be mirrored on the other side of the ship. But that would make engineering significantly wider if it was made into one big room. Maybe there are two engineering rooms? A port side and a starboard side, with one being "main" engineering with Scotty's office and the ability to control the other?

I guess my question boils down to, why mirror the curve of the ceiling when it necessarily creates the impression that the tubes are off-center? Just curious, not a criticism. :)

My prime directive, so-to-speak, is to match what we saw on screen first, all other priorities are second (like, how does it fit? How does it work?). Therefore, allowing enough room to port of the engine tubes to accommodate the large power unit definitley dictates that centerline of the room be moved from the nice and tidy alignment with the engine tubes to just port of the centerline of the tubes. I then used that new centerline as the symmetry point for the ceiling. It isn’t ideal, as I would have loved the engine tubes to be the center of the room as well, but it makes more sense to throw everything off to accommodate what we see on-screen.

Looks just like being there Donny; as always, great job!!

Are you planning on doing the 1st season engine room? In the episode "The Enemy Within" it shows much more of the RH side of the engine room. Just curious since you had this much done it doesn't seem to be too hard to do the earlier version (even though the room is 4' longer).

Yes, I plan on coming back later and doing the Season One version of the engine room, placing it in the primary hull and calling it “Impulse Engineering” (despite scripted verbal cues that indicate it was indeed in the secondary hull). I’ve got “Engine Room Fatigue” right now, so I’ll probably do this at a later date.

And, FYI, I want to finish up the Emergency Manual Monitor and the Dilithium Storage Control Room (as seen in “The Alternative Factor”) before moving on from Warp Engineering.

Outstanding as ever. I enjoy seeing the unusual "never-seen-before" views, like revealing the full width ceiling and the interior of the "green room."

I always look forward to more of your updates!

The shooting script calls it "INT. ENGINEERING - LITHIUM CRYSTAL RECHARGING SECTION."

(Absolutely love your work, by the way).
