Opinions on The Orville

Exactly. But TNG and DS9 took a while to find their feet and even Voyager grew somewhat.

Orville could become something more than it is at the moment - I'm glad it will get the chance.

I'd still like to see Mockingbird back in the MCU though...

I think I'm one of the few people that actually was looking forward to her Wonder Woman show... :D

I dream of an Earth where Smallville turned into Metropolis, spawned the Aquaman and Wonderwoman pilots, and released Arrow as a fullscale Bat show, which still launched Flash. Full scale JL tv universe, with the big crisis style crossovers being released every Summer in the Theater... :)

I love The Orville and I don't know where people saw a season full of dick jokes. What I saw was a season full of regular people doing regular things and having fun at the same time. In that way it reminds me a little of Farscape with a bit of Star Trek tossed in. Considering I love both, it's a match made in heaven.
I know I've said it before, but pretty much all of the characters The Orville are more realistic than any of the characters in the Star Treks.

Yeah. Except maybe LaMarr, but I loved that social media episode and why can't you drink on the bridge. That scene might have helped sell me on the show. These are regular people, not the "best" people. I probably would drink soda on the bridge too. Missions could be boring, or just traveling at Warp for 5 hours. What goes on during the whole "travel" thing anyway.

The scene that really made the characters feel like real people for me was when they were getting Bortus to eat all the different stuff in the mess hall after they found out how tough his digestive system is.

It's a nice nostalgic romp. The older fans who pine for the TNG days seem to particularly glom onto it.. Agree with the sentiment that it's all stuff that we've seen before.

Disco is an entirely better series. But The Orville scratches the itch for lighter fare.

I like it ok myself. It's not particularly deep, but it is (usually) fun. So, I look forward to it returning next season.

If it is, then it means that spirit of Trek has stagnated and not moved forward in decades. I prefer forward progress.

Well, to each their own. I'm glad both series are on the air.
Exactly. The "spirit of Star Trek" can be carried by more than one, but really these shows should be their own thing.

And the fact he told everyone to shut up afterwards :D I love the fact that he's essentially Worf, only doing things we'd imagine Worf doing. A quiet and sensitive type ;)

To be fair, social media wasn't really a thing when the majority of Star Trek was on the air, and Star Trek of the 90s was remarkable terrible at predicting technological developments. Yes, I am talking about the crateful of pads being lugged around on Voyager. So Trek not tackling this particular issue isn't really all that shocking. After all, it's only been in the past decade that something like that has really become a topical subject.
You know what I always found odd about that? By the time of Voyager, there were already PDAs on the market by the early 1990s that allowed for multiple functions from word processing, to web browsing, games, and finance. The stacks of PADDs on people's desks were just silliness.

Why in the world would you want it to have MORE technobabble? Is this some type of satire of sarcasm?
Call me crazy, but I love a show that is anchored in futuristic science and heavy on the technobabble. Really! No sarcasm!

I'm thinking the PADDs were still being used becasue even in the future, people like to read in locations other than sitting in front of a workstation. Yes, the information, the technical journal, whatever, are probably in the main computer, but thee still had to be an option for a crewman who wants to review information while they are sitting on a couch or a halodeck hottuub. Also, missions might have been loaded into PADDS for an awayteam member as a back up, in case communications with the ship were lost.

Having PADDs are fine, I'm talking more about having multiple PADDS on one desk, as if they are all dedicated to only one thing. Even technology in the mid-1990s was far more advanced than that.

There is a reason why people with information heavy jobs like to have multiple monitors on their computer. It's easier to keep different information on screen at the same time instead of switching tabs all the time.

I mean when I'm working on my computer I may have my phone in front of me while I could get the same messages on the computer. It's just easier to keep some full screen program open on a computer, use phone for messaging and maybe use tablet for reading manuals. It would not be unthinkable to add a extra tablet for some other task.

Yeah, I have a dual monitor setup, but we're not talking one or two PADDS, we're talking piles of them. At the very least, this seems silly:

Now, on my iPad, I can have dozens of apps open, and jump back and forth between them without missing a beat. I would certainly hope that technology has been improved upon in the 350 years since the iPad 4. I realize it's just shorthand for "look how busy I am," but it just feels very silly to me.

It looks foolish now.

That image should be a Silly Caption Contest image.

I think if you took the best elements of The Orville and Discover, and combined them into one show, we'd have the best Trek show yet.
I think you just answered your own question. It's a visual shorthand for portraying how busy he is and the complexity of the problem.
Sure, but you can easily do that just by showing him flipping through a bunch of different open programs and documents on one PADD.
