Why do Star Trek fans hate Voyager? - Link

And of course for some VOY might have been their first trek for others their 2nd, 3rd or 4th and as such had seen many of the stories done before and we can tend to compare to the last time we saw that particular story.

How to get Away with Murder actually seems to be, maybe not on purpose, using the same framing techniques as Damages. Flashes of the present in every episode as the past slowly catches up. Although I think How to get away with Murder is doing it better.

Interesting. I skipped DAMAGES, so I wasn't aware it employed the same tricky structure . . ..

Rose Byrne is supernaturally beautiful, but Damages lacked any teeth.

A nice ride, but no real pay off for your loyalty.

my god must we have another stupid hate thread? We already had one in general. Blech.

Anyway "star trek fans" is a very big brush. But if people want to hate VOY and ENT (which is the one that gets the most vitriol) whatever. My library of love is bigger than their library.

MY LIBRARY OF LOVE PEOPLE! Yeah.
I think we all have our favorite shows, it's very personal. Me for example, I love most of Trek, but what I like most is the exploration of outer space aspects and some diplomacy related stuff. And I prefer episodic series as well, it should be simple, but yet a lot of speculation and philosophy, which I find plenty of in ENT, VOY, TOS and TNG. Some Sci Fi TV series tend to run into long serialized stories, even if they can be very interesting at some times, and have episodes which really hit interesting topics, other episodes could turn out boring and some even bad. But the bad ones are quite few. I think I could count to about 10-15 Star Trek episodes I did really not like, most of them being in TNG and DS9, but again that's my personal preference. Some characters I find good, and others I find bad. Personally, the race I dislike the most of all Trek, is the Ferengi because their greed. And they appear a way bit too often IMHO. That has affected how I view some series/episodes. But that, again is very personal. I find Data very fun, Neelix is a good entertainer in a cute way, but again others really seem to dislike him. Why? Captain Archer is also really a good character in my point of view. Captain Picard is a wise person, but Janeway is more determined and brave in a way I rarely see in Star Trek Captains. That's a good thing indeed. I like it when they explore the psychosocial and political aspects, but not too much of it, please... After all I prefer the ones about exploring new strange worlds... I am not much fond of DS9 but that series also has it's episodes with wise insights. And Sisko is brave too. So it's way better to tell what you like personally and what you find less interesting/entertaining. That would be very different from person to person. It hurts to see someone hate Voyager much enough to start a blog about it.

I enjoyed Voyager more so than the other series, of course with each series there are some episodes that have little replay value but the series I found not all that enjoyable besides Discovery, is DS9 but even then I enjoyed a few episodes here and there.

I don’t hate Voyager, but I was incredibly disappointed with it, based on the premise they announced, compared with what we got.

It’s certainly got heart, and it’s own sense of identity.

I had a boss I shared an office with, loved Voyager, but I just couldn’t share his enthusiasm for it. Ironically, I’d seen more episodes, had multiple viewings, and knew far more about it.

Casual viewers. Pfft.

The only sci-fi shows I really have the time to watch and understand are X-Files & Star Trek: Voyager & The Orville.
- For X-Files and Star Trek: Voyager, this was the main actresses (Gillian Anderson & Kate Mulgrew) who have given me the desire to continue the adventure. Their performance was excellent: often moving and sometimes, funny. Anyway, it was a peasure to follow their characters.
- For the Orville, I liked the ‎lighter tone that was adopted in the show even if the issues were quite serious.

I grew up watching TNG, laying on the living room floor, family sitting on the couch behind me.... I like all 5 series fairly equally, but Voyager is my favorite.

I think enough time has passed that anyone still posting on a Trek board is a lot more likely to like Voyager.

The impression in the general population is uninspired characters, some of which are annoying, and mediocre standard of writing content to stay in its predecessors’ shadow.

It’s also easier to like Voyager now that you know which eps to skip and can laugh more and the sheer ridiculousness of the series low points.

It's not false, JirinPanthosa, especially the last part. :techman:

In general you'll get
  • People who hate the show

  • People who are indifferent.

  • People who criticise the show (this might come across as hate to some, but another way to look at it is they believe the show could have been so much more than it was so on some level they care about the show.

  • People who love the show for what it was.

It's a show that had so much potential but wasted it away on silly story lines, reset after reset, no damage to the ship, no character development, put a leash on the writers. Voyager should have been even more gritty than DS9 or dare I say Enterprise.

but wasted it away on silly story lines
I'd put this into the "no" box.
reset after reset, no damage to the ship, no character development, put a leash on the writers.
And this into the "myth" bin
Voyager should have been even more gritty than DS9 or dare I say Enterprise.
For this, I would say Voyager could be just as gritty as DS9, and often was. And DS9 was just as often as silly as Voyager. In effect, the suppositions cancel out each other. Both shows had a similar balance of tones, and story types. I would give Voyager the slight edge for genre exploration.
