Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Got a weird email today telling me that something was being shipped but the manifest was blank. Wondering if it's the wayward Phase II magazine.

preview for the XL enterprise-A looks spectacular:

preview for the kelvin timeline klingon warbird... looks ok...

Now THAT is what the E-A should look like! Looks as if they did a subtle aztecking on the hull, which is nice, and they finally did a decent job on the nacelles. This definitely doesn't appear to be an up-scale from the smaller model, thankfully.

And that new Kelvin Klingon ship reminds me how much I wish Discovery had followed in those footsteps. Re-imagining something is okay, but keep the core lines that made it famous in the first place.

except.... there's still that weird notch on the starboard side of the saucer. not sure what that thing is but it's present on both standard refit models and it's weird.

but yeah it looks great and there goes my restraint with the XL models again.

Huh...didn't notice that before. If I were to guess, it seems to be the location for the gangway hatch. Problem is, it should only be on the port side. The starboard side never had that. Nor should it be that pronounced, I agree.

I noticed, too, that all the RCS thruster mounts appear to be a tad-bit recessed, which is incorrect - they should be flush with the hull, with only a small recessed outline. Oh, well...the 3D mesh seems to be to blame for this one. They can only print what they're given.

there's some really nice details here though. the blue paneling on the ventral section of the stardrive is particularly interesting since the blue detailing was almost invisible on the standard model. hope they fixed the deflector dish too, but that might be too much too hope for.

^ Yeah I'm not interested in either of those personally. Looking at the pictures I'm like "erm, I already have those." (#90 the Romulan Scout and #82 the Warp Delta)

I mean I know we've had similar ships before with slight differences, Excelsior/Enterprise-B obviously, Reliant/Saratoga (and the upcoming Bozeman), Equinox/Rhode Island... haha and I do have all those...
It's just for me these ones don't quite do it enough to warrant buying them.

^ I’m afraid that’s what makes Eaglemoss decide against giving us the ISS Discovery and ISS Shenzhou. Star Trek productions are terrible when it comes to realising merchandising opportunities. We need more beefed-up mirror decals.

More Klingon/Romulan cross-contamination that has saturated the franchise in all universes since TSFS. They called it a "Klingon Warbird" in the movie, remember? :)

First reaction: Squeeeeeee! Wanted this for ever.

Second reaction: Why is it green when it's VERY OBVIOUSLY GREY in the movie???
they're clearly working from this model:

it's entirely possible the ship is desaturated in the film because we see it through a viewscreen. or the model is oversaturated in the preview photo, as has been the case with others in the past.

in either case, it's way too clean, but haters gonna hate.

It shockingly occurs to me that the E-A paint job has both the phaser banks and RCS thrusters painted gray! I always thought they kept the same yellow color that the original 1701 refit had. I checked out close-up photos online taken of the filming miniature at the Christie's auction and - sure enough - gray! Wow...real Mandela Effect moment there for me.

idk, they look pretty yellow to me...

Yeah, I thought that at first when I saw them, but realized that all the photos are on the warm end of the spectrum, using natural light. The big-E should be fairly white. Since everything has the same yellowish tint, if you move the color back to a good correction point, you get from this:

... to this...

And it does look gray. Not quite as blue-gray as the B/C deck ring, but definitely not the bright yellow it used to be.

Sadly, since the old IDIC page has been gone for years since GeoCities went away (I think that's where it was being hosted), finding original photos of the studio model as it appeared in TMP with its original paint job has been difficult, but I did find one of the original publicity shots showing a much yellower RCS and phaser bank:

And this famous cutaway poster based on Doug Trumbull's refit design and paint job has them looking REALLY yellow:

The Vulcans called Klingon ships "Warbirds" in "Broken Bow".
We could go back to TOS when the Romulans were using Klingon ships, suggesting a brief military alliance between them before things went south sometime after the signing of the Khitomer Accords. Maybe the term "warbird" originated with the Klingons...
