C'mon, Lenore, Now's Your Chance!

Spock's Barber

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
In Conscience of the King, Lenore Karidian and loverboy Kirk are completely alone on the Shuttlecraft Observation Deck. She had the perfect opportunity to wack Kirk. I know it would have stalled the episode and ended TOS as we know it, but why didn't she at least try and kill Kirk?

Quick answer. She was bat crazy. Longer answer. Her desire to kill the witnesses who could reveal her father's identity warred with her growing love for Kirk.

Much longer answer: Lenore killed those witnesses when she thought they had realized who were father was. After all, she probably had many opportunities to kill Leighton before she did but she did so only after he was convinced that Karidian was Kodos. Perhaps she then jumped the gun so to speak on Kevin Riley but there it is.

Bottom line. She was bat crazy. Note, consider that Lenore wasn't only murderously crazy but she was also able to apparently completely conceal her madness and her knowledge from her father.

Too bad she was crazy, because she was one of the first Trek babes. :)

She shrewdly realized that if she killed the Starship Commander first, she would probably not have access to Riley at all, given the hubbub that would ensue. So kill the Lowly Lt. in a way that looks accidental first...then bump off Kirk.

...Also, she basically killed Leighton right when her flight was leaving. So perhaps she wasn't so crazy at all? Waiting until the starship has delivered the Karidians to their destination would increase her odds of survival quite a bit.

After all, her stated goal wasn't to finish off the Nine (a quest she could complete right there and then, at the cost of her own freedom and supposedly that of his dad as well). It was to allow the Karidians to live happily ever after.

In the end, though, she did try and bomb the Captain. Was the attack calculated to allow her and her father to survive? Or calculated to fail, for some reason?

...Perhaps Lenore was a methodical and careful serial killer, making no mistakes, and Kirk was unable to prove anything - so the Captain himself set a phaser to go kaboom in his own quarters, and then walked in at the exact right moment, knowing his XO of good hearing would spot the whine and allow Kirk to "save the day"?

Prior to the "attack", McCoy wasn't even convinced Riley had been targeted by a murderer. After the "attack", Kirk could engage in a more active hunt for the killer.

Maybe Kirk just killed Leighton and then tried to blame it on Lenore. Hey, why not since we're just making stuff up? We can pull whatever hair brained interpretation we want out of our ass

Maybe Leighton killed himself to give his argument about Anton Karidian more weight.

I doubt there would be a way for Lenore to kill Kirk and not make it look like an accident. Everyone would know that they were on the observation deck together, and thus she would be quickly discovered.

Plus, what's she going to kill Kirk with? She's not armed, she can't beat him in a fight, and she wouldn't have the poison with her that she tried to use on Kevin Riley (she'd certainly hide that in her quarters).

She supposedly tried to kill Riley with an industrial lubricant she found onboard. She tried to kill Kirk with one of his own phasers. She later obtained a gun right off the holster of a guard! Obviously she's good at improvising methods of murder; no doubt she could have spaced Kirk, or caused him to fall to his death, by placing a knee in the right place at the right time.

Making it look like an accident would be difficult. But it's not as if she tried to make Leighton's death look like one.
