Cornwell is actually a pretty good Admiral. Despite how the season finale made her appear, she clearly doesn't fit the "evil Admiral" trope - IIRC, her plan to exterminate the Klingon homeworld had the backing of the Federation Council, it wasn't something she just came up with on her own. And you'll notice that when Burnham has to remind Cornwell why that plan clearly won't work, and stresses the importance of upholding Starfleet principles, Cornwell actually listens to her and backs down...

In the end, Cornwell is a remarkably well-rounded character (more so than most flag officers in Trek who aren't named Maxwell Forrest ever get). She is well respected by those around her, she's got personal quirks, likes and dislikes, AND she's a woman of action - she can clearly handle herself in a fight, and is a survivor of Klingon captivity. (And she had great chemistry with L'Rell.)

Actually, he's definitely alive, Spock Prime tells nuKirk he lived to see him take command of the Enterprise in the Prime timeline in ST09.

My initial reaction was 'of course' but I don't actually think they'd go with a Captain Kirk-but-not-that-one. It's too confusing to the casual viewer as Kirk is one of probably four Trek names your casual viewer would know.

My guess is that the new captain will be a new original character played by a quasi-well-known actor, but will die within the first three or four episodes, and then Michael or Saru will become Captian of Discovery on a permanent basis.

Or it will be 'Number One' from the Enterprise.

April was captain of the Enterprise before Pike. I think Pike was always intended as Kirk's predecessor (ie, Pike doesn't leave the Enterprise until Kirk comes aboard).

Six or seven seasons is about average for Trek and other shows, and I very much doubt that CBS will abandon their golden goose, which is the primary driver of their streaming service.

I think we need to stop assuming Trek shows will do seven seasons any more. It’s not common for big shows to hit that number these days (with the odd exception), so I’d be very surprised if Trek did (happy surprise).

Aim for 3 seasons, then hope for 5. After that, be grateful for all we get, I think. There will be still be Trek on the air when Discovery stops, but I suspect it will be a newer and younger series. 5 seasons per show sounds reasonable now, and cost effective (costs generally shoot up on TV shows after 5 seasons).

Why would it be Saru? He has 7 or 8 actual months on the job as first officer. Riker was first officer on the Enterprise D-E for 8 years. Saru did not do anything extraordinary to warrant such a quick promotion, especially when Starfleet just went through a war. The only reason to promote him would be that there were no other senior Commanders or captains available to take command of the ship. I don't even think he would want it.

They also had a major and devastating war where lots of people where killed, including I assume many highly ranked Starfleet officers, thus people just get promoted quicker. Maybe that explains Kirk's fast rise! Lol

Real life example, read up on the Westpoint Class of 1915 'The Class The Stars Fell On' there was an unprecedented amount of people that became Generals from that class (like a third of the class) because between the rapid rise through the ranks they got out of the gate through WWI and then 20 years later due to WWII...

Times of war means rapid rises in ranks, thus it would make logical sense Saru could be premoted fast.
