Picard's space station painting

Mojomoe

Commander
Red Shirt
Heya folks -

I'm hoping to crowdsource some info.

The painting that Picard has in his quarters - you know, the one of the space station hovering above a planet that is sitting behind his desk? I know it's a Sternbach. I'm hoping to make a print of it for my son's room, but I need a high-res capture to work from.

Can anyone think of an episode where it might have been in full focus? I can think of a few, like Pen Pals, that have a portion of it clearly in focus, but I'm blanking on episodes that show it clearly, so I'm relying on your encyclopedic knowledge of every frame of TNG.

Help a fella out!

Thanks.

Looks like this same question was asked a couple of years ago...

Is this the picture?

Not sure where you can find the print though, assuming this is the one...

^ that would be amazing. Rick, if you're out there, I'd love some info...

Until then, all I have is snippets I might be able to piece a high res together from. For example, this one:

...from The Battle has a relatively clear section. Can anyone think of other scenes from throughout TNG that might show it clearly?

^ Have you considered that the painting might not have been rendered in fine detail to start with?

It's called a soft focus technique.

Even if so, the painting is much higher quality than those pics. Looks how much better it looks in the TNG cap.

Exactly what I was saying, but I didn't know the proper term. I don't really know how big a picture the OP wants, but enlarging anything we can find on the internet isn't going to work.

It sounds like about 3' x 2' based on the dimensions @Mojomoe gave earlier. At 60dpi, that would be 2160 x 1440 px. I'm not sure that screencaps are going to work. If @Rick Sternbach is still here, he's the best one to help. It is an amazing painting.

I'm a concept artist and digital painter by trade, so my goal would be to find some high-res caps and recreate the piece.

Ideally, for a print we'd be talking at least 24"x36", minimum 300dpi, max of 600dpi.

I should add that my goal is not at all to infringe on Rick's amazing work. To be honest, I'm amazed there isn't already a recreation out there like there is of the Enterprise painting in Picard's ready room (which I had as a kid, lol). My 3 year old is already a huge TNG fan, and I'd love to have this hanging in his room.

I wish I had something positive to contribute, but I can't find any snaps of the painting in my files. I believe this was back in the dim reaches of the past when all I had to make images was my Nikon F2 35mm film camera. I did the painting as a bit of a tip o' the hat to Bob McCall, worked on it until like 4 in the morning, snapped a few pix, delivered it to the set decorator folks, and went home to snooze for a while. I've looked through my slide files but nothing so far.

Rick

Rick -

Hey man, much thanks for looking. It's interesting to hear the story behind this - any inclination people would still be discussing that 4am painting all these years later? I would assume not.

One artist to another, would you be offended if I did a recreation to hang on my son's wall?
