I just rewatched this episode after about 30 years :
In the scene where Kirk bludgeons Khan in engineering, what the heck is Kirk hitting him with? He just grabs a random rod out of the wall like it was meant specifically for the task... handy place to store a weapon.

Obviously, Kirk realized he needed an advantage for his next engine room fistfight and he had those bars installed between "Court Martial" and "Space Seed." That's what makes him Starfleet's finest Captain.

Bullshitting a reason should be straightforward: Khan threatens to blow up the ship, but doesn't really want to do that (like all great spacemen, he doesn't believe in losing), so he has pressed the button that brings out the emergency control rods, the pulling out of which will quickly halt the chain reaction he has initiated purely as a means of blackmail. Finney OTOH wants to end it all in a blaze of glory and the rods therefore remain behind their seamless hatches...
