Ah...you've found a catch-all excuse for any bad continuity with the first two seasons.
Oh, and: though I mostly liked the last ep, I'm getting darned impatient for details on DeVoe's big plan for "The Awakening" or whatever. If it turns out to just be a generic attempt to forcibly augment everyone's IQ, or the capacity for the same, a la Magneto in X1, I'll be irritated. The show is getting bland enough as it is; time for some actual risks in the villain and storytelling departments.
What motivated him, according to the flashbacks, was the desire to communicate his ideas to others' brains, to make them see things as he did. So I suspect his plan is global mind control, to project his own thoughts into everyone's heads and do their thinking for them.

A couple months ago pictures surfaced online of Devon Graye back in full costume as the Axel Walker version of the Trickster filming on location with Elongated Man. So it's most likely this episode.
Also only a few nights ago actress Corinne Bohrer posted on Twitter that she is appearing in the new episode that night. She played the Trickster's girlfriend/sidekick Prank on the final episode of the John Wesley Shipp version of "The Flash" in the 90s. She does not say who she plays. But everyone from that series has played some type of new incarnation of their previous character on this current series. My guess - Axel Walker's mother???!!!
That was my hope when it was revealed that James Jesse as Axel's father. They have taken so much of Trickster's backstory from the orignal series. Who would be better suited as the mother of his child but the almost as insane Prank!

That could be very cool, but I'm glad to see that they're turning up in anything regardless of the role. I've enjoyed them in several (older) things like that very short-lived series with Alyson Hannigan, some of the Police Academy movies (or was it just the one, I forget), and Veronica Mars.
Sorry...just getting back into this thread. I have LOVED this season. They really thought this villain through (pun definitely intended)
I especially loved how the writers played us along with the Flash crew....when we first saw Devoe, I had assumed his wife was "merely" his assistant. But they made them a deep villainy couple who actually care about each other. I am sure that will be a weakness to be exploited in some way.
I hope we haven't seen the last of the original Devoe actor - he was brilliant and would love to see more of him.

I suspect the "mystery girl" asking Barry to say "I do" has significance. Not just who she is, it's obvious she is a descendant of Barry and Iris from the future. But that he never did say it. Neither at the planned wedding or that rush job with Diggle, Oliver and Felicity. I suspect it becomes a issue that they are not legally married and have a more formal ceremony. Perhaps it comes up in Barry's trial that Iris does not have legal status as his spouse or something,

I looked up US marriage laws, and at least in the general, nationwide laws, there's nothing I can find that says you need to say "I do" in order to be legally married. You need the partners to be on the record as consenting, but I think that could be determined at the point of getting the marriage license beforehand or signing the marriage certificate afterward. There needs to be a witnessed, officiated ceremony, but the law doesn't specify what has to be said during the ceremony. It looks like the Declaration of Intent (saying "I do" or "I will" to the "Do you take...?") is a pretty standard part of the ceremony, but I'm not sure it's legally mandated.
It may depend upon the jurisdiction. I see a couple websites calling the Declaration of Intent a legal requirement, but at least one website says it is "no longer a legal requirement." I recall the justice of the peace (when I got married) listing it as one of the requirements for Massachusetts, but I could be remembering that incorrectly.
I believe right after Ralph was introduced this season the writers were asked about his earlier mention of being dead in an interview. They admitted they completely forgot it. I wonder if they would use it for Pied Piper as well. That was so weird how in season 2 Barry went back to the previous season, on returning learns history is changed and Piper is now a friend and ally of the team. Yet he has never appeared again since. If he would show up again as a friend so much later anyone who missed the second episode would be confused.
Are you suggesting that The Princess Bride may not be an authoritative text on the legalities of marriage ceremonies?!
Weird in-story, perhaps, but in real life, I'd guess it's probably something to do with Andy Mientus's availability. Although it seems he hasn't had any acting credits between The Flash and a just-premiered series called Gone which seems to be airing internationally but hasn't yet reached the US.
This show is just depressing now.
Can't wait to see Barry vindicated.
It was odd that Barry didn't even try to defend himself. I mean, the only thing Cecile needed to do was to create reasonable doubt in the jury's minds. If she'd offered a plausible alternative theory about how Barry was framed, that could've done it. It would've been hard to work around the parts where he's the Flash, but there just needed to be enough doubt cast on the physical evidence, timeline, and so on. I mean, heck, everyone at the Christmas party could testify that Barry was with them at the time DeVoe was killed. That alibi alone should've exonerated him. And what about the security alarm at his apartment? (Also, did anyone notice if DeVoe's wheelchair was in the apartment? It would've had to be for the frame to work, but I don't remember seeing it.) So it shouldn't have been so impossible to get an acquittal.
Iris barging into the courtroom demanding to speak -- and the judge actually allowing it -- was absurd, but the Speed Force heart-to-heart with Barry & Iris was striking and rather beautiful.
