Can Romulans Mindmeld?

We know Romulans & Vulcans stem from a common ancestor, & while only Vulcans are shown mindmelding (To my knowledge) Do they possess that ability from training/learning it, or is it an inherent trait, in which case it might also be present in Romulans?

I liked the theory somewhere that the Vulcans were actually the result of genetic engineering and the war on Vulcan was essentially similar to the Eugenics war on Earth. So essentially Vulcan telepathy, intelligence and strength was genetically engineered which led to the Romulans getting kicked out.

To be honest it makes a good deal of sense.

I would suspect that the telepathic powers some Vulcans possess are enhanced / enabled by the mental disciplines they learn through the teachings of Surak. As such, Romulans probably do not have those capabilities.

From the ENT S4 Vulcan story arc: "Surak tells us the mind meld is the heritage of every Vulcan" (or something like that).

Of course, this was to counter the stuff from earlier in the series about how only certain Vulcans could meld. But it reaffirms that the ability is genetically inherent. So I think the question is, could a Romulan learn the skills that are required for successful mind melding?

I tend to think they more than likely can't, but probably could, because as others have said, for one reason or another, they are undertrained, or otherwise underequipped in their current state, but if it is genetically inherent, (Which I like to think it is) then it's not really a skill to learn, but more like a talent to be honed. So in this way, Romulans are rather underprivileged. It makes one think that if Spock had done more than just push logic & Vulcan history at the Romulans, & had done more to introduce mindmelding, it might have opened up more potential in their embracing of the way of life. Plus it might have made the plot to that episode a little more interesting lol

Then again. Perhaps it would be dangerous to introduce the ability at this stage, because it would likely be abused

I've always been under the impression that the mind meld was something that came about on Vulcan after Surak's movement was firmly in place--by then, Romulus had already been settled, so those early Romulans never developed the ability. It's there, but it'd probably need centuries of development to match the Vulcans', IMO.

But after mind melding to obtain information, there could still be torture yes?

Yes, but Romulans strike me as more, don't know how to put it, 'efficient' than the Cardassians? Like I think they would inflict the exact amount of pain as needed to achieve their ends and no more.

Remember in Mind's Eye when the Romulans is inflicting pain on Geordi. He's not getting any pleasure from it, he's cold and dispassionate about it like a scientist. If they had the option of mind melding, I don't think they would have needed to use mind probes in Inter Arma Silent Leges.

Also, do Romulans experience any kind of Pon Farr or is Pon Farr a direct result of emotion suppression?
There's a theory that suggests that yes, Romulans do experience ponn farr, it just isn't as noticeable because of their lifestyle. Vulcans spend their entire lives supressing their emotions, when they get the seven year mating urge they are no longer to do that, they become emotional and berserk and the way this is handled is they go back home, have an elaborate ceremony in which their friends and family are invited, which ultimate culminates in the Vulcan and their partner having sex. Romulans, on the other hand are regularly emotive and express their feelings. They probably don't notice they have a seven year mating drive because to them, there's a day where they are suddenly in a bad mood, and they deal with this by going to a nightclub and scoring some tail. Next day, they're in a noticeable better mood.

Ironically, the Vulcan method in this case isn't really all that logical.

I'd argue the issues are closely related. Mindmelding is what Vulcanoids do for sex - all of them, even if some vehemently deny it. It's just typically not done with much finesse, and those who don't subject their minds to Surakist ascetic exercises can't turn general horniness into an interrogation tool.

Not letting emotions meld freely is what worsens the natural (for a certain value of the word, assuming Sargonians didn't do anything funny with the Vulcans) fertility cycle into this pon farr thing. On the other hand, the ascetic approach weakens the natural connection between sex and brutal vulcanicide, so there are some benefits.

Somehow I think you just said that to Romulans, Pon Farr is basically just PMS. Not that I'm disagreeing, I just thought it was worth a lol:guffaw:

So... without the ascetic approach to emotions to quell their often-violent nature are you implying that Romulans would be engaging in some brutal sex? Joking... but now also genuinely curious. :rommie:

HAHA! I love that irony behind this and of course 'going to the club and getting some tail' LMAO!!
