Spoilers which old allies could we see on episode 9?

Not at all, remember the Yoda scene.

Disney have made it quite clear that they don’t care for the OT characters, they’re simply there to ‘prop up’ the new cast.

They’ve managed to kill off Han (Harrison’s choice admittedly), Luke, Ackbar and obviously Leia won’t be seen on screen. Chewbacca is now just briefly used as comic relief, C-3PO has had about 2 minutes of screen time in the last 2 movies and R2D2 just sits there n beeps.

Disney adding more ‘old allies’ at this point doesn’t seem at all likely, especially given their over-powering message of ‘Let the past die’ in TLJ.

The way I recall it in the Last Jedi a call was sent put to old allies...they didn't make it in time for The Last Jedi...but I am assuming they will come together for a big battle royale.

People have already speculated on Lando who seems obvious.

What other possibilities?

The remnants of the New Republic fleet?

I've always wondered what it was like, actually. In TFA and TLJ we only saw the Resistance. We never saw any of the actual New Republic starfleet. I doubt they were all wiped out by Starkiller.

If the Empire can survive being destroyed and then regroup into the First Order, then the Republic can do the same.

Most of the fleet was in the Hosnian system when it was destroyed IIRC.

Also we did see some of the New Republic fleet in TFA, in orbit around Hosnian Prime, the ships are just so distant they're hard to make out. Appears to be a bunch of Mon Cal ships and maybe a Nebulon?

Still, though, there were only like five planets destroyed onscreen by Starkiller, amirite? I'm sure there's a fair amount of them left. Ditto for the ships.

The New Republic was designed to have its capital rotated among different planets on a regular basis, so they had to have a contingency plan in case something happened to its current capital. Thus the entire Republic wouldn't be destroyed even if Hosnian was.

Hux's comments notwithstanding, of course.

The New Republic fractured after the attack, because they were highly decentralized:

Considering how decentralized the Republic is compared to the Empire, I half expect the remains of the Republic Fleet to become Homeworld fleets for whatever system they were operating out of, rather than remain as part of the overall Republic. Say Corellia, for instance, decides to go independent once Hosnian Prime is gone, and its fleet commanders decide to stay to defend the system. Instead of warlords like the Empire would get, you get instead a bunch of System States and their self defense fleets out of the former Republic. Like if Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland were sacked suddenly along with Newport News and at least a major part of the US Atlantic Fleet. Suddenly it becomes possible that the various state governments, instead of banding together and fighting, decide to defend their own borders and the local Army and Air Force commanders agree to defend what they have now that the chain of command is at least partly broken. Sure there is probably an Admiral leading the Pacific Fleet in an effort to stop whoever it is that took out the US capital and surrounding areas, but they might get little to no backup from say a Fort in Georgia or a Naval base in Texas.

So? The total opposite of Kylo Ren's little manifesto happened, it didn't affect the message of the story for you. The fight for freedom began anew, the Rebellion was reborn, and the Jedi continued. The past is alive and well and informing the present and future.

Except it didn’t, Kylo’s (Disney’s) message was loud and clear in terms of the treatment of the OT cast and has nothing to do with the continuation of the Jedi. That was always going to happen anyway, what I am saying Disney doesn’t care much for the old characters, old allies etc. which is the topic of this thread, Not your interpretation of the story, which, if I remember correctly, no body answered their distress calls so how is that the rebellion is reborn? They have no leaders left.

Even with hyperdrive, it takes time to get from place to place in the SW universe. It's not instantaneous. And I doubt any allies are just sitting around with ships at the ready, making the snap decision to go fight the First Order the moment a distress call comes in. Leia was among those getting on the Falcon. She's basically the commander in chief, so it's hardly "no leaders left."

And I doubt any allies are just sitting around with ships at the ready, making the snap decision to go fight the First Order the moment a distress call comes in. We know Leia won’t be in episode 9 though, not on screen anyway. They said they sent out the signal yet no one answered, no body cared enough to answer or couldn’t. I just don’t see how that is the ‘rebirth of the rebellion’ and even if people start to hear of the legend Luke Skywalker going against the first order by himself, it’ll take years to recruit enough people/worlds to come up against the First Order. So what happens in those years? The First Order will only get stronger under Kylo Ren.

I have a lot more faith in the rebirth of the rebellion (and the eventual restoration of the Republic) than I ever would in an insecure, whiny jackass like Kylo being able to lead the entire First Order.
