The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

Disney/Buena Vista has four of the top ten movies of 2017. Their total box office domestic take for last year is $2,410,448,444 (with seven releases in 2017 and five carry-overs from 2016.) That's a 19.5% drop from 2016, which certainly is significant, but remember that a big part of TFA's money ($284.7 mil) came in in 2016. There were more releases in 2016 (13 to 2017's 8). Not to mention Finding Dory was released in 2016, which was another fairly large win for D/BV. I think that stockholders are going to be okay with those numbers.

With Solo and Avengers: Infinity War, 2018 should be huge for them.

Not sure how related this is to box office grosses, but I noticed that there are much fewer 3D showings at this point than there were for TFA and RO at the same time after release. In Los Angeles, for example, the TCL Chinese Theater (one of the best venues in the city) now has only one 3D (IMAX) show per day, compared to three in previous weeks. Locations outside the city are largely reducing to 2D only after Friday.

What does this say about sales?

That 3D is expensive but people are still willing to see the film. Why not have more showings of what will sell?

So people are not willing to pay the price for 3D TLJ after a month in the theatres, whereas they were with TFA and Rogue One? Sounds like a major box office issue to me.

That or there are more movies coming out that are also in 3D thus the theaters need to use those for other films other than just the Star Wars movie.

In the specific case of the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, it is the only IMAX screen in the venue (used for both 2D and 3D screenings). There is no other film showing in that particular theatre other than TLJ. So, they are purposefully cutting the 3D shows in favor of 2D.

I could give the bluntly smartass reaction: 3D sucks.

Perhaps, but going by the number of showings, it didn't suck as much for TFA and Rogue One at this point in the films' runs.

Can’t speak for anywhere else, but my local cinema didn’t even get the 3D. I think the closest was at the IMAX.

I thought I’d heard Disney was cutting back on the 3D in general. They’re no longer converting their back catalogue, and there was something about certain regions no longer getting the blurays.

Maybe they thinks its a fad, or the movie just wasn't made with 3D in mind, really. Some directors love it, and others just tolerate the idea. Others just don't know what to do with it and would rather just shoot the movie they want to shoot rather than worry about stuff coming out of the screen or needing visual depth. Even when Lucas started to convert the older films to 3D, he didn't care about things flying off the screen, but was more interested in giving scenes depth. The large vistas and canyons type thing. So that it looks like you could walk into the movie, rather than the movie coming into your space in the theater (like some of the older 3D films tried to do by shoving something out at the audience were you either see people flinch or reach up and try to grab something just over the next person's head. Captain EO comes to mind for that).

Slightly less blunt smartass answer? I’ve noticed in our local theaters over the past year and a half fewer 3D screenings. 3D TVs are no longer being manufactured. It seems to me that 3D is on its way out as a premium format. If you have a good cinematographer, you don’t need 3D conversions or expensive cameras to shoot in 3D. You can have amazing depth of field without the novelty of crap jumping at you.

Me? I think the last 3D movie my wife and I saw was TFA 3D IMAX. (Before that it was Avengers 2.) We certainly didn’t waste our money on Rogue One in IMAX (we weren’t big enough fans of the movie to spend the limited money we had at the time on that format) and then we just haven’t gotten around to TFA in IMAX even though we did, at one point, have tickets to a 2D IMAX screening.

Regardless, I think these 3D and 4D things are just fads. I think larger format screens are really the wave of the future. I’d spend more money on a 70mm or IMAX showing than anything with 3D.

But that’s just me.

Okay, okay, it was a long-winded answer. :p

Well, to be honest, I felt the 3D did nothing for the movie. There were no scenes that really stood out as "wow!", unlike TFA which was designed for the effect (the best was the one scene with the Finalizer poking out of the screen at you).

Current trends are showing that Jumanji will be very very close for this weekend. How close do current trends show you being to having sex with Kate Upton tonight?

Estimates show that I wasn't wrong... $2 million win for Star Wars. That means the actuals COULD still have Jumanji in front.

Hey, how's Jumanji doing vs. The Last Jedi? I'm assuming it's won a few weekends now and is starting to put TLJ in the rear view mirror given the overwhelmingly negative fan reaction to how many childhoods have been raped.

Wait....oh....nevermind. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=starwars8.htm

In other news, I didn't get to have sex with Kate Upton. Can't win 'em all I guess.

Kind of weird time for your comment with last jedi looking at a 3rd place finish this weekend...

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

A film that's heading into it's 4th weekend after already making $1.1 billion worldwide (making $35 million) is now 3rd place behind 2 other movies that have been out for less time :wah::wah::wah:

Since when did a movie have to be first place forever? :brickwall:

Are we going to have this fucking nonsense for Avengers 3 & 4 and Episode 9 too.
