Post-Nemesis Era Fan Fiction

RollerGirl Tasha Skar

Hi everyone.

So I'm working on writing fan fiction with the goal of making fan episodes that take place about 25 years after Nemesis. I found Star Trek Online to be a decent starting place for big-picture universe events but my little ship can do practically anything in it. Here's a quick run-down of my crew:

[FONT=-apple-system-font]Captain Bianca Wright: Transgender human female from Seattle. She enlisted in Starfleet during the Dominion War and her first mission was the second battle of Chin-Toka. Once commissioned, she served in a tactical role before making Captain. This ship is her first command.

Commander Zaina Hazari: Human female from Tehran. First Officer

Lt. Commander Mike Keller: Human male. Chief Engineer

Commander K.C. Collins: Human male. Chief Medical Officer

Lieutenant Bankes: Human female. Tactical Officer

Lieutenant J.G. Pruur: Caitian female, Helm Officer

Ensign Johnson: Human male from Colorado. Operations Officer

The ship is the USS Seattle: a Nova Class Refit science vessel. Since Captain Wright is primarily a tactical officer and has a sense that things are going very wrong in the galaxy, she's had the ship's weapon systems modified to include two pulsed phaser cannons like the ones on Defiant.

I'm open to story ideas for short stories/episodes.

Sounds like an excellent premise. However, I'd encourage you to make up your own events during the past 25 years to make this ST universe your own. Shake things up, play with some political alliances and mess with your readers' expectations. Perhaps the Federation is now allied with the Romulans against the Klingons?

And always remember that regardless of what's happening in the larger political picture, the story will ultimately come down to your characters. If they're not engaging, it won't matter how interesting the setting you put them into.

Good luck!

Sounds interesting. I do agree that setting this apart from STO would probably make more sense, though. It'd certainly give you a lot more freedom when telling your stories. I'm working on a fan fic series myself set in 2399 and that's the route I've decided to take just to give myself more creative breathing room.

Having never played STO I know nothing about it's timeframe so, as Gibraltar mentioned, you'd need to make sure your characters are developed, well-rounded and catch the readers attention. This would be an interesting new era to read about though.

Tagline for story idea (Open for constructive critique and comment)

"Warrior Hearts"

Captain Wright's first mission in command is to patrol the border of Gorn space and use USS Seattle's advanced sensors to monitor the increasing tensions between the Hegemony and the Klingon Empire. When she encounters her adoptive Klingon father making a last stand against an overwhelming force, she must chose between her loyalties to Starfleet and the closest thing she has to a family.

I'm open to interesting thoughts for plot twists, etc.

"The Sargasso System"

While investigating a star system where multiple vessels had seemingly disappeared, USS Seattle becomes mired in the cloud of space-dwelling, energy consuming plants. Losing power and coming under attack by pirates, the crew will have to use every bit of their skill and training to survive.
Again, this tagline is only a start. Please feel free to add to this and toss in something unexpected

In a totally other note, I kind of base this idea from the never-filmed "Sargasso Stars" TOS episode. It needs major updating, though, as the original story had the Enterprise fire torpedoes into the star to destroy it and thereby kill the space weeds. I thought of remodulating something, or...

I was really pumped until I saw all the humans.

The transgendered war vet captain sounds intriguing--far more so than most canon captains we've met so far. But why are all the other characters human? It's your story of course. But with all the colorful characters and races we've seen in the "Star Trek" world, I feel like you're selling yourself short here.

WarpTenLizard is right, the crew is way to human centric. Star Trek still gets this wrong, where in the tv shows, most main characters are human. Try and mix it up.

Also, don't overdo backstories. A transgender captain is pretty effing cool, but an adoptive Klingon father?

I missed the adoptive Klingon father. I could work, IDK. But yes, the human cast is not only limiting for any "Star Trek" series set after the TNG era, but especially for one set a generation after! This should be an opportunity to show various groups in the "Star Trek" world as of 25 years from "Voyager," and how things have changed. Has the Cardassian government lightened up? Have Gamma or Delta Quadrant worlds joined the Federation? Are liberated Borg drones now more common? So many possibilities.

Depends on the era. I set my stories in TOS/TAS time frame, so humans are more prevalent in Star Fleet.
