I adored this two part episode. It took us back to the very beginning with the barrier and to the very end of their mission which I always had wondered about. I loved the transition to TMP era. This was great in just about every way. I loved the acting, writing and the sets. I will miss them. I can hardly believe that years have passed since this began. Its the end of an era and they went out soaring.

I didn't get it. Same as the rest of the other STC fanfilms, incoherent narrative, subplots don't support the plot, while the plot doesn't support the story... if there was one. I love the production though, top notch. I had a hard time buying the whole 5 years timeline, taking it too literally. I doubt Kirk started his command in the episode "Where No Man has Gone Before", I've always believed the crew had more experience than what was shown on TV.

5 years still feels new to the game IMO, which was something I thought Roddenberry and Coon attempted to avoid being too literal with the years spent in space. 5 years in space would be a lot different than 5 years on Earth. 5 years??? According to whom???

The second pilot started with a Star Date 1312, then by the second season the Star Dates leaped frogged to 4445, and by season 3 it was 5100, because of the low ratings, I think the producers made an attempt to make the cast appear older and giving them new uniforms to give the impression time had passed. So by the end of the final episode Kirk and Co. had completed their 5 year mission.

Spock's strategic incompetence in the fanfilm is beneath the character. It's simply not the character. And the title To Boldly Go... should be more than just a poor sequel to WNMHGB, and to cover up for some serious plot holes from a previous fanfilm about a woman not being in command of the USS Hood... competing for the job against Spock, of all people. Having his name in the hat is a done deal IMO, no hearing no nothing-- just give Spock the keys to the Hood. But based on his lack of logic in that two part fanfilm alters an intricate element of the character.

Spock has always been the best symbol of humanity on the show but hid it quite well from his crewmates. The STC producers and the actor who portrays Spock knows nothing about the character. Spock being tricked at a pinnacle moment of this bad fanfilm only proves this is not Spock! There could be a few frailties from the character, but the one thing which is universally known is Spock is not a fool!

Spock is a character a lot of people have trouble writing for some reason. They either overplay the cold logic or make him too human, and to degrees they either make him too infallible or too fallible. I liked Haberkorn's performance but hated the way they wrote his chatracter throughout.

So this show establishes that the Enterprise is the only Constitution Class starship left in the end.

Don’t know if that was already established canon, but if it is then that would mean that the ENT-A must have been a brand new ship.

Wasn't that part of the point they were trying to make in Star Trek V? A new ship, barely even out of drydock, that hadn't undergone complete shakedown yet.

There's never, ever a reference of the USS Enterprise being a "Constitution Class" in all 79 episodes of Star Trek. Since Television is a "visual" medium, there's factual evidence the ship was a "STAR SHIP CLASS" vessel. Some retconning going on me thinks!!!

Because someone say the sky is pink for many years and revamp books about it retroactively doesn't make true.

Then that would mean the only reason they’d bother to build a new Constitution particularly after all that time was as a tribute to Kirk, and it was meant to be a surprise.

And of course the keel was laid long before STIV since the original Enterprise was destroyed months before the new one is launched.

Technically, yes, it's retconned if you want to interpret it from a strict constructionist view of canon. The name Constitution Class didn't come up until Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual in 1975, then was adopted by later productions, like when Scotty calls the original Enterprise a Constitution class in "Relics."

But just because some random graphics or throwaway lines say Starship class doesn't mean that's the only acceptable name. They probably just hadn't thought to come up with a proper name for the class of ship at the time because, from a financial standpoint, the show couldn't afford to show off multiple classes of Starfleet ships.

It's like "The Enemy Within." Nobody on the ship says "Oh, the transporters are down, so let's rescue our crewmen stranded in the cold with the shuttlecrafts," because the episode was written and produced before they had conceived the hangar bay and the shuttlecrafts.

Actually Constituion-class is indeed referenced in TOS only rather subtly. In two instances schematics are flashed onto a view screen that reference Constituion-class. One is of a phaser schematic viewed by Khan in “Space Seed” and the other is of ships shown on the briefing room view screen in “The Enterprisr Incident.”

But TOS never referenced that the Enterprise was the last surviving Connie. That is retconned from GR’s novelization of TMP.

Were these references in the original Original Series or the HD remasters?

The cast looked older because they WERE older. The costume change was a simple production decision. There was no creative decision to do a time skip.

What an insulting statement. Agree or disagree with the choices, but this is just ignorant.

    Treadwelll... multiquote. C'mon.

I don't think that's correct as regards "The Enterprise Incident", because looking at screen caps (link) the text alongside the Enterprise images don't conform to a word as long as "Constitution", but do, if fact, appear to exactly match this image (link) which says "space cruiser".

BTW, for everyone who argues the size of the ship, note the scale on the diagrams. That's as canon an on-screen reference to the size of the Enterprise as one could hope for. :)

Thank you, I tend to love TOS and the great development done from Mr. Nimoy and the writers to make Spock an incredible icon of a character. STC never had a clue what the Spock character is and happily never will.

Treadwell, I'll play it your way, STC is the greatest series ever better than the TOS.

A lot of the mis-info is coming from the leading retconned site on the net called Memory Alpha where stuff they're implanting are highly questionable. Star Trek was never interested in the whole class of a ship. It was about the stories it was trying to tell. Ever since the fans turn pro got their hands on Trek they're compelled to distinguish ships, and the constant failure to rewrite TOS.

If STC was attempting to honor TOS they would simply respect what the original writers and artists had done and not honor retconned stuff. They would have a leg to stand on if they made an effort to have other starfleet vessels with a class identity, so then the constitution non-sense would be kind of credible. The mindset for them always felt like TNG to me.

Anyone who looks at season 2 of TOS and compare it with season 3 the cast appears dramatically different, while seasons 1 and 2 their faces look closely the same.

Does anyone believed with a declining viewership the Desilu production would complete 5 seasons of Star Trek??? Getting another season, luckily, they would have to skip along to complete the 5 year mission. This is not obvious? The question is not for you, Treadwell, but to people who actually watch TOS.

There is no question that Vic Mignogna has a a love for TOS. The same can be said for Robert Sawyer. But there was indeed a strong TNG like sensibility to STC that got in the way of STC being truly in sync with TOS as a genuinely consistent and convincing extension of the original production.

Being produced fifty years after the fact it’s inevitable a measure of contemporary sensibilities could creep into the production, but wholesale fanservice and retconning as well as trying to “fix” the characters and the TOS universe to fit TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT continuity tainted any real sense of authenticity.

STC’s best efforts left me thinking, “Yeah, for the most part I can see this happening in the TOS series if it had continued, and I can see the original cast saying and doing these things.” I could buy something conjectural if it was something that coulld have been done even if it wasn’t likely. STC’s missteps happened when they indulged in things that never could have been seen in the original production even if it had continued.

“Fairest Of Them All” is an oddity. It could have been done during TOS even though being a certainty it never would have been done.
