I think LTJ’s performance has less to do with any perceived quality of the film and more to do that this is the third Star Wars movie in 25 months. These movies aren’t the cultural touchstone events they once were.

Shocking, hardly (a little surprising) and a flop...

A movie that will still gross anywhere between $1.4-$1.6 billion minimum (we don't have enough information on worldwide numbers at this point) is not nor ever will be a flop.

TLJ was NEVER, EVER going to make more than TFA, we were talking about $2 billion+ and TFA had the advantage of riding a much bigger nostalgic wave that added $$$ to the Box Office.

Yep. TFA was the first Star Wars in a long time. Now it's a yearly thing. Diminishing returns were a certainty.

Soon they'll have their own streaming live-action series. It'll be interesting to see what the equilibrium is for the movies' cinematic performance after that.

Wow... No kidding... This movie is amazing and a massive success... Sorry the fanboys got offended by it and take pleasure in the fact that it isn’t raking in the cash like its inferior predecessor did.

Good point. When I heard about Disney's ambitious plans for the franchise I knew eventually it would lead to saturation. i was thinking it would be much longer down the road than this, but this could be the start of it. That being said, I also believe there is a perceived quality issue at play here. The media talk has been about the backlash more than just glowing accounts of its box office dominance.
 
Considering the draw from this film, and the now planned Johnson's inspired trilogy, I think we'll see him again in Star Wars.

Its the Solo movie that's having the issues.

Looks like the 14.6 mil. estimate might have been lowballed. More recent data puts it closer to 17.

Given Abrams involvement, I highly doubt it. Given that Disney has tapped Johnson to helm an entire trilogy we will see him helming films again. Given that the film is still making big money inside of a huge franchise, the odds of a reset and never Johnson again are even worse than navigating an asteroid field.

Please don't mistake Box Office predictions for studio satisfaction, sine Johnson clearly has earned Disney's approval.
 
The number thtwill matter to disney/LFL, will be the fnal net profit, Gross is fun to look at, but to studios net profits are what really counts.

You have production costs, which they've recovered
Marketing costs
legal fees
taxes
licensing, and merchandising costs
Theater costs
etc

ETA: Christmas day estimate is in - $31.4 million. A solid number. Will be interesting to see how it does on Boxing Day. Rogue One owned it with $32 mil.
