The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

Not only the huffpost. BBC and Vanity Fair have too. There seems to be a campaign to discredit the negative reviews and blame it on people signing up with multiple accounts. But as Rotten Tomatoes has said a lot of people have felt passionate about it and are signing up to write reviews.

I don't get all the negative reviews... I'm a mega SW fan.. I have been since I stood in line opening night when I was 7 years old back in May of 1977... My wife and kids are mega SW fans.. I have a tight group of friends who are mega SW fans and to a t, all of us have loved TLJ for what it is.. A rousing adventure movie that made us laugh, cry and want more... Seeing it again this weekend.. I know that mine is just a minuscule sample size, but even outside my "inner" circle, I don't know of a person that I know who hasn't loved it...

I know I know.. "Good for me." Then again, I'm a Dallas Cowboy fan too, so I'm used to people hating on something I love, for no apparent reason. I get it.. I don't have to understand it.. I just have accept that some people feel that way.. They didn't like it.. Sorry they didn't.. But still.. SMH...

The numbers are definitely showing weakness now a lot of people have seen it. It's nearly 100 million behind TFA domestically already despite opening only 27 million behind it.

Waiting until next week to see it again...work schedule making it impossible to get to a showing right now due to the 2:30 hour run time.

I need to hang out with you. I need that kind of SW optimism :techman:

I enjoyed the movie for the most part but I also enjoyed the prequels, so there's that... I think with this movie and TFA, compared to all of the others, is that fans feel slighted in that how the new trilogy is treating beloved characters who, for all intents and purpose, are the foundation of the Star Wars franchise.

The only character who bears any resemblance to their OT selves is Leia. She, as she was in the OT, is strong, courageous, and a natural leader and didn't seem to waver in her path as a politician and tactician.

Han Solo on the other hand goes from being a scoundrel barely scraping by but who always shoots first, to a great leader in the Rebellion, the husband of a Princess, a trusted friend, and one of those who helped found the New Republic only to revert back to being a scoundrel who's barley scraping by.

Luke's arch is even worse. He goes from being a farm boy looking up at the stars to the hero of the Rebellion, to a Jedi Knight who defeats the two most powerful Sith Lords in history. After one or several missteps, he nearly murders his nephew, then retreats to an unknown planet live out his days as a hermit and die while the rest of the galaxy burns around him.

Yes, in real life, even heroes are subject to failures, and I'm not claiming our heroes in Star Wars are perfect so there's no doubt they've had their fair share, but usually individuals who shoot to the top, do so for a reason. I've been trying to think of a real world counterpart to Luke and the only person I could think would be someone like John Glenn. Now maybe I'm wrong, but can you see someone like John Glenn cowering in a corner while his friends are in dire need of help?

It's now 120 million behind TFA domestically and is looking like a 70 million second weekend (TFA scored a massive 149 million second weekend)

This is not going to go the way you think.

You saw what I did there...

Yeah, none of the characters are copies of ANH characters, they all have different motivations and personalities.

Which is TFA's saving grace; the characters are a bit rough-edged but they're not carbon copies. Some roles have been jostled but not the personalities/characters.

I've gathered TLJ has had "poor" box office figures - popular but not as whoosh-big as was (expected in their vacuum). Popularity contests are one thing but how good is the script and the directions it is taking and the two are not symbiotic. TLJ, from what I've read, certainly looks extremely compelling and daring to take risks, even with unexpected turns toward heroes. It might fail but in 1977 it was a risk to make "Star Wars" (later given the subtitle "Episode IV: A New Hope"). Critics hated "Episode V" back in the day as well.

Gotta go see it now, not to ramp up box office figures but to see if what I'd read (which I think is rather good) holds up to what's shown in motion video. :)

$14.63 mil. (est.) on Christmas Eve day. Rogue One did 15.3.

No one expected this do do TFA's numbers, but after that insane opening weekend ($220 mil., only 11% behind TFA's record), LucasFilm must have hoped for a lot more.

69 percent drop in Christmas weekend. This is shocking. The movie is basically a flop at this point. You sales down too. Expect Rian Johnson to be taken off any future Disney projects. His career is pretty much over due to this massive disaster!

I thought it would do a 100 million second weekend, box office mojo are estimating a 68 million second weekend. Still huge by anyone's standard but definitely a lot less than expectations.

A main saga movie having a weaker Christmas Eve day number than a spinoff film is disappointing whichever way you look at it.
